Question Laptop won't detect monitor while using VGA to HDMI converter

I have a laptop hooked up to two different displays. One is hooked up using standard HDMI port/cable with no problem. The other is hooked up with a VGA to HDMI converter since I am limited to only one HDMI port. When I power on the converter by plugging in the USB power cord the monitor will wake up and cycle through the inputs and then stop on HDMI and say "no signal". I figured it may have been a faulty converter so I bought a different one. The same issue arises.
