That depends on the chip you select.

^^Since this is a huge list, just check the Core i5, i3 and i7. They are the latest.

The latest desktop CPU's can run all the way up to 3.4 or 3.6 GHz. You also get multiple cores per processor, which actually means several processors running at that speed.

CPU cache is olso a great factor. There are L1-L2-L3 cache on your procesor wich greatly improves performence when it comes to reading the same data.

Architechture, cache, QPI/DMI/FSB/HT freq. and the number of cores are a lot more important for CPU's nova days.

To answer your question, i think the highest stock CPU freq. is 3.4GHz (the PII X4 965).
