Hi,

I have had a big clue as to what could be the cause of my shared
partition issues. A quote from btsoftware (who I bought OS selector
from)

-------------
There are some limitations when using larger harddisks. The BIOS
must be able to support the disk size, otherwise you will have HUGE
problem accessing the disk, especially the parts above the BIOS
limit. If your BIOS does not support LBA48, you are limited to a
diskspace
of 128 Gb. Everything above will fold to lower disk locations and
overwrite
the wrong disk space.
-------------

The pc was by advent, I would hope that they'd use a compatible bios.

Is there any way I can check - I can tell you it's an award bios, and
the motherboard is an "ecs 760m",

is the motherboard

and

is the bios

I appreciate it maybe dificult to tell the bios version from that -
unfortunately the power on test, is covered up by the "ADVENT" logo on
screen, so I can't get the version from that, as it disappears too
quickly..

Is LBA48 something that is OS specific - if so do WinME and 98se not
support it?

That would explain things...

thanks.

Dan:
What exactly is the problem? Is it that you're considering purchasing a
large-capacity HD > 137 GB and you want to know whether your motherboard
supports it? If so, yes, your MB supports large-capacity disks.

The other requirement is that you have SP1 and/or SP2 installed.

I recognize that you've stated that there are some "shared partition
issues". You might want to amplify precisely what these issues are.

hi,

The PC had the large HD (200 gig)

so - would I be right to assume that there is no fix for winme and
win98?

if so that would give the answer to my shared partition issues, which
are that if copying files from winxp onto the shared partition, the
files can't be read from ME or 98se... (shared partition was at the
end of the disk, but should p[robably be moved to the first 120gigs...

nope!

almost - was wondering about problems using it to access data above the
120g limit...

right - I'm using a winme partition now, at the begining of the disk,
with no problems, so I think I'll keep my ME, 98se and shared
partitions in the first 120 gigs..

Dan:
If I understand you correctly, there's *no* problem involving the
recognition of your 200 GB drive in XP, right?

You want to know if there will be any problems using that drive in a
Win98/Me environment, right?

The answer is probably yes. Those operating systems have sufficient
difficulties in dealing with drives > 127 GB, that we *strongly* advise
against using drives of that capacity and larger in Win9x/Me OSs.

I'm not sure how your "shared partition issues" will enter the picture here,
but as I've said, as a general proposition we advise against the use of
drives having a capacity > 127 GB in those OSs.
