Hello guys, please help me, am begging you...
i started having this stupid problem after i built my first computer, in my old computer it was all fine, am using an ethernet cable between my pc and laptop, it is crossed or whatever its called, when i plug it in it gievs me an error, limited connection or no connectivity which pisses me off, i dont know how to fix it, it was all good on my old computer.. i have all the drivers installed everything is up to date..
sometimes it connects, but after 10 mins it disconnects again, and sometimes it works fine until i reboot my pc..

It's just a standard/straight ethernet cable (no crossover), nothing special (cat5e is what they'll sell you 99% of the time and it's the cheapest). Just tell the guy you want to connect a PC to a router (even though you don't) and you'll get the right cable.

Online is almost always a better deal, perhaps even cheaper off eBay. But if you need it now, obviously you'll pay more in-store.

If it works sometimes, esp. as long as 10 mins, then fails, it sounds like a hardware issue, perhaps a bad cable, failing ethernet port, etc. There's just no reason something like this should suddenly stop. It's not even a particularly complex setup.

As far as the limited connection message, that's usually because your computers are configured to use DHCP by default. But when you have the two computers connected directly to each other, there's no DHCP server in the mix. So the DHCP requests by each computer fail. But normally it should still work because Windows will self-assign IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x network. But you still won't have a gateway address for accessing the internet (which makes sense, you're not connected to a gateway, just each other). So it warns "limited connectivity", which roughly translate to "I can communicate w/ the other machine, but just beware, I can't access the internet".

Just to be sure everything is ok, let’s see the network configuration. For each machine, hit Windows key + R, copy/paste the following into the box:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > %tmp%\tmp.txt && start notepad %tmp%\tmp.txt"

... and hit enter.

This will open a file detailing that machine’s network configuration. Upload (copy/paste) the contents of those files to this forum.

Ok, based on those ipconfig dumps, the network configuration is not as you described it.

All I see are two computers, each configured w/ wireless adapters, each connected to the same wireless router (192.168.1.1), each using DHCP, each w/ a valid IP address (192.168.1.12 and 192.168.1.11), and each with a valid gateway IP (192.168.1.1). All very normal and should allow both computers to communicate with each other, and access the Internet, over wireless.

So how or where does this direct wired connection between the two computers come into play, if at all? Because again, that’s not what’s showing up in the ipconfig dumps.

Is that it? I see one machine. It's using DHCP and has a 169.254.x.x. address (correct), no default gateway (correct), and DNS server (192.168.0.17, probably not correct, was that supplied by you? because in a peer to peer config, you usually don't have a DNS server).

So where's the other machine's config?

Moaad-PC is not connected over its wired ethernet port (media disconnected), although it is still connected over wireless (I didn't include that). That could be because there’s literally no cable connected, or the cable is bad, or the ethernet port is bad, or perhaps the ethernet adapter/connection in Network Connections is disabled.

Anonymous, on the other hand, is connected over wire, using DHCP, has a valid 169.254.x.x IP address, etc., iow, all appears correct (except for that pesky DNS server).

The first thing you need to do is make sure the wired network adapter/connection is enabled on Moaad-PC. And that a cable is connected between it and anonymous. Yes, Moaad-PC needs to have DHCP enabled too, it will then self-configure its TCP/IP settings, just like anonymous did.

the cable is on, i dont get the other stuff, do i have to set somethings or do things? am sorry am terrible in networking stuff, please if i need to do something can u do it for me throught teamviewer. the cable is working, cuz i was using it in my last build and everything was fine.

I don't mind using TeamViewer, but I'm just concerned that it won't necessarily help since that just places me on one machine, perhaps the one that's already configured properly. So fine, if you want to use TeamViewer, give it a try, but again, I may need access to both sides depending on what I find. Send the connection info via private message.

no, not yet, i will try to get it tomorrow morning, but really i dont believe it would work, since when i got there last time he said i need a crossed over for this kind of network.

Unless these are very old computers (say >6-7 years), a standard cable will work fine. Most modern network devices use a technology called auto-sensing MDIX, which just means they’re self-configuring (they adjust the polarity automatically). In the old days, YOU had to make that happen by using the right type of cable. But those days are long since over. You don't even need auto-sensing MDIX on both network devices, just one is sufficient. So the ONLY time you're going to have a need for a crossover cable is when BOTH network devices are very old and thus perhaps neither has this feature.

I just tried that ethernet cable that connects the router to the satelite thing that comes with tv and it seemed to work, it had UTP4, CAT5 or something, can someone give me the right name of it so i can go buy it? and is it straight or cross over?

It's just a standard/straight ethernet cable (no crossover), nothing special (cat5e is what they'll sell you 99% of the time and it's the cheapest). Just tell the guy you want to connect a PC to a router (even though you don't) and you'll get the right cable.
