Login Problems

Hello!

I just copied my hard drive to a new, larger one with Norton Ghost. It
copied fine and booted fine. I am at the login prompt and I log in via
network or local administrator and it will accept password but within
seconds, go back to asking to to press CTRL-ALT-DEL and I will try
again and it is an endless loop. It will not get to desktop.

Suggestions?

This happens because your drive letters have changed
and the system is unable to locate userinit.exe. The cure
depends on your setup:
- Is the machine networked? or
- Do you have easy access to another WinXP/2000 PC?

Yes it is networked and I have easy access to another PC...what do I
need to do next? The new drive stands ready and as I said before, it
will boot but I can't log in, even in SAFE MODE.

1. Boot up the problem PC but do not log in.
2. Run regedit.exe on a networked PC.
3. Open the registry of the problem PC.
4. Navigate to HKLM/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/.
5. Delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\X:"
where X is a letter between A and Z.
6. Reboot the problem PC.
