Logon Procedure

I have two computers. They both use XP Home. One thing that I don't
understand (among many things!) is the way the logon works. On one of my
machines the system requires that I click on the user name before the bootup
continues. On the other machine the system just boots up without that step.
Why is the procedure different? Thanks.

The difference is in your logon settings. Go to Start->Control Panel->User
Accounts->click on "Change the way users log on and off" and select the
appropriate settings to make the systems the way you wish.

In the original release of XP, if there was only one user account with no
password, it would boot straight to the desktop. Adding the .NET framework
update to the system changes that. This account is hidden but it is
"active" for programs that need it. Its existence causes the stop at the
logon screen.

You can change this by using "control userpasswords2" in the Start> Run
line. On the screen that appears, click on your account name. Remove the
check in the box that requires users to logon with a password. Then supply
your account name and password. You've just established autologon for your
account.

If you choose to do the above and find that you need to log on with another
account (default administrator account, for example), press Shift while XP
is booting up and it will stop at the Welcome Screen.

Thanks Sharon. What you said is precisely the answer I needed. Much
appreciated.
