Question Looking for advice to upgrade my Apex Legends experience!

Hello all,

I've been too long out of the loop on hardware to make some good choices to grant myself a better Apex Legends experience. I have a decade old PC that has served (and still does actually) me very well but Apex Legends is slowly ruining my gameplay the past months. I can imagine that a series of factors such as, my low and slow RAM, outdated CPU, and a no longer supported graphics card contribute to this decline in performance. It's the only game i still play on a regular basis, and it's the only game for me worth to do something about it. Currently i run it on 1080p @ 60FPS, but as you might know now it has become very unstable in terms of fps and smoothness. Tinkering with the settings is not helping anymore.

So my initial question is simple, which hardware do i need to play apex legends @1080p 120fps?

My current PC has the following specs:

- i5 4590
- R9 390
- 8 GB DDR3 RAM
- 250 GB SSD
- 2 TB HDD
- GIGABYTE GA-Z97P-D3 motherboard
- Cooler Master V650 PSU
- Windows 10

My second question is, can i upgrade my existing PC with parts to reach my goal? If so what do you suggest i do or what would you do? And which parts do you recommend?
In the end it does not matter if i need to go out of my way to buy second hand parts or buy new parts. In this scenario there is no need for futureproofing or scalability.
My own thoughts were in the mindset of "maybe upgrade CPU + GPU and add more RAM" but at this point i don't even know if it's going to reach my goal since my PC is so outdated.

In the other scenario where i buy a complete new system if i wish to play Apex Legends @1080p 120fps, or higher resolutions such as @1440p 120fps or @4k 120fps the question is still the same; what hardware do i need to achieve that/those goals?

I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this post, for any comments, thought's and idea's. I am pretty sure it will help me a lot, really!

John

What country are you located and what is your budget?
The Netherlands.

Have not really thought about budget but since you asked, in case of upgrading my existing pc i would think it would not be worth it to spend more than €350-€400 if i keep on playing on my existing architecture. Feel free te let me know if you disagree.

Willing to spend more if it turns out i'm better off upgrading to DDR4 motherboard for my goal.

In case of a new system, which will come with many other benefits obviously, i think i will have my spending limit around €1500 - €1750 but my first step was to find out what my options are with my current setup. Also I'm not even sure if that kind of a budget will suffice for my goal in this day 'n age.
And of course still interested what i would need for a new system to reach my goal.

Thanks,

John

That looks good thanks now i have a starting point! There is no graphics card added here though did you miss it or do you believe that these parts together with my R9 390 will make it work @1080p 120fps?
Thank you very much.

For 35 euro more, you can buy the i5-12400 non-F CPU. If you don't have intergrated graphics and the GPU craps out on you, you will have no display.
The extra insurance is worth the small price, but it's your decision. F type Intels do not have integrated graphics.

Also, new GPUs are going to be out around next Easter. Intel, AMD and Nvidia will have full new lineups available.
I'm pretty sure you'll get more for your money than the 4060 you'd buy today.

The 4060 is good for your needs, and it's pretty good for the price. It lacks power for most demanding games but it's fine for most others and it draws very little power.

So you can wait, or buy one today. Both choices make sense.
