Question Looking to upgrade my cpu but dont know what to get

I currently have an i5-7400 and i would like to get an I7-9700k however this would mean i would have to get a new mobo and probably ram aswell. I could just get an i7-7700k and this means i wouldn't need a new mobo but i dont think id be able to OC. Is it worth it to just upgrade to the i7-7700k or should i splash out a little to get a new mobo and stuff for an i7-9700k?

i have a budget of around £700 and im just pretty sure my cpu is bottlenecking my pc and i want an upgrade so i can play games at a smooth 144Hz

I would not get a Intel CPU if you aren't on the plattform already at the moment. I would recommend a Ryzen 7 3700X or if you want to have more compute perfomance a Ryzen 9 3900X. AM4 has a brighter future than 1151v2 since it seems that the new Desktop CPUs from Intel are gonna need new mainboards again.

After a lot of searching I found this...It seems to have a 450w power supply which means factoring in a decent gold 550w to 600w PSU:

Here is a part list based on the 9700K which will provide max FPS but of course Ryzen will be cheaper especially if you go Ryzen 3600... Still for pure gaming the 9700K is about as good as it gets with only the 9900K being just a bit better. As for longevity, the 9700K will last you a long time at least 2 generations of Ryzen and Intel and by then we will be well into new architecture on both sides. Also the 9700K seems to have dropped to just £315...from £390. Might be a mistake by Amazon UK but...

Wow thanks so much haha. Are you saying i would need a 550-600W psu? and also should i need to worry about space in the pc case? the dimensions are 50x20.5x49cm

No problems at all and you make a good point with the case as to be honest I am not sure but if it is a standard ATX case which it looks like there should be no issues. You need to check if there is space for 2 x 120 fans lengthwise for the AIO though or go air cooling. Personally, I would bite the bullet and just get the great Fractal Design Meshifi C which is a great airflow case and will do justice to the parts you are about to buy...

With new gaming consoles coming out with 8 cores I think you should not consider any CPU with 8 threads or less. 8 threads will probably be yhe minimum for running AAA titles - but what about windows background tasks?? Anyway Id recommend something with at least 12 threads and up. (Ryzen 3600, 3700 3800, i-9900k). That said, I think Ryzen 3900x or anything more is overkill. 8 cores, 16 threads is the sweet spot. I myself am saving up for a 9900k, since I have an mATX board and case.
