Lost my defragmenter

For a few months now I have been using Diskeeper Lite, a defrag program I
downloaded. Today, I thought I would try the original default Windows
defrag program for a change. But it is gone. It has been replaced by the
Diskeeper Lite. Can I get the windows defragger back?
TIA

Have you tried uninstalling Diskeeper?

Try these options:
1) Uninstall Diskkeeper Lite and reboot. If the that doesn't help then try
the following

2) run System File Checker which should search for and replace corrupt or
damaged system files. Pop your XP CD into the CD-Rom drive and cancel the
installer screen. Go to Start->Run and type

SFC /SCANNOW

SFC may take 20 mins or more to run. When finished reboot.

3) or you can try this process - which you might want to print out for
easier reference

1. Go to Start -> Run and type MMC
2. Add the Disk Defragmenter snap-in:
a. Console Root Menu: Select File->Add/Remove Snap-in
b. Select the "Standalone" tab.
c. Click the "Add..." button.
d. Select "Disk Defragmenter" from the list.
e. Click "Add" and then "Close".
f. Click "OK".
3. Right-click on the "Disk Defragmenter" in the tree.
4. Select "New window from here" (a second window comes up).
5. Close the first window that was open using the "x" button
6. Maximize the second window (from Step 4)
7. Hide the console pane (tree view) with the toolbar button.
8. Set MMC options:
a. Console Menu: Select File ->Options
b. Select "Console" tab
c. Type the name "Disk Defragmenter" in the name box.
d. Set Console mode to: "User mode - limited access, single window"
e. Check "Allow users to customize views"
f. Uncheck "Do not save changes to this console..."
g. Click "OK"
9. Save this config file as: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc
10.Close MMC you are all done with it.
11.You should be able to start Defrag as normal now.
12. You can toggle the console view by going to View->Customize View and
uncheck Console Tree to make it look like the original or check the box to
give you the tree.

If that doesn't help then I think you will need to try a Repair Install. See
here for How To Run A Repair Install

If you look into it further, you will find that XP defragger is a variation
of Dsikeeper Lite. The interfaces may appear slightly different, but the
software is fundamentally the same. In contrast, the full version of
Diskeeper has several features beyond those in the Lite version.

Then I'll have no defragmenter at all?

Thanks for your response.
The problem is that mine came pre-installed with XP Home. So mine is a
Recovery Disc and not an installation disk. I am not sure if it will work
with sfc /scannow.
Also I looked at the contents and it doesn't have the i386 folder. I have
emailed the vendor asking him where do I find that folder. He hasn't replied
yet perhaps due to the vacations. Anything else I can do in the meantime
apart from going to MMC which may be quite difficult for me? Also with my
type of disc, would I be able to do a repair install?
TIA

I think you're right there on it being the same as Diskeeper Lite. But I am
having the Diskeeper Lite in the original, because when I click on it, it
tells me to upgrade to the paid version as an option, which I can close and
carry on.

Sorry for the delay. had to go out of town for a bit.

Tried your MMC fix. At 2d I do not see "Disk Defragmenter" in the list. I
only see "Diskeeper Lite." So if I proceed, I would be putting in the
Diskeeper Lite which is already the case.
What shall I do next?

1) Do a Search and see if you can locate dfrg.msc in C:\WINDOWS\system32
2) If so right click on it and select Properties.
3) Under the General tab see if it says Opens with Microsoft Management.
4) If not then click the Change Button
5) On the next screen click the Browse button and locate the file mmc.exe
located in C:\WINDOWS\system32
6) Click Ok and OK all of the screens out.

You might have to restart your computer. Then try the steps again for the
fix. If this doesn't work I'm unsure of what to do. You don't have a Windows
XP CD to run System File Checker or a Repair Install. I guess you could
purchase Diskkeeper Lite.
