As a general case, does Superior The Summoning count as a 'recruit
ally' action, or is it a 'search your library for an ally' action,
that leads to an ally being recuited? (the latter similar to how Pier
13 'equips' you, but is not an 'equip action').

I'm guessing the former, based on the Vast Wealth ruling [TOM
30-JAN-1996], unless that's been overturned since.

So, if the former, Marlena with a pre skill card does not tap when
taking a superior The Summoning action.
What if she searches and fails to find an ally?

Does The Summoning action have to find an ally for it to be a
_successful_ 'recruit ally' action?
I'm guessing not, and thus Szechenyi Jolan can untap if she searches
and fails to find an ally, based on 'successful' normally meaning paid
for an unblocked (although the whole 'bleeds reduced to 0 or less'
being successful actions but not succesful 'bleeds' makes me wonder
whether it is a successful _action_, but not a successul 'recruit')

The Summoning is both a "The Summoning"-type action and a "Recruit
Ally"-type action.

Pier 13's lack of being an action is the only thing that keeps
it from being an equip action, yeah.

Correct.

Correct.

Then she fails.

Moot in Marlena's case, since she doesn't care about success.
It is a successful action.
It is not a successful recruitment.

Correct.

damnit! i'd found that post when i was looking, but google groups'
'hide quoted text' thing hid the bit that was useful, and left me with
the bit about set's call.
