Sloppy reporting by Toms, otherwise everyone's questions would be answered.
Yes, it was AT&Ts servers. BUT it is Apple who promises to keep your info secure when Apple demands your email address. So this is Apple's problem, even though caused by AT&T. Apple is the one that shared your contact info with AT&T in the first place.
It was not JUST email info that was compromised. ICC-ID and SIM info was also compromised. That allows for triangulation by any person, nation, or company with the wherewithal to track wireless signals. There were a bunch of @darpa.mil @us.army.mil @usdoj.gov and other military/government emails that were released. These email addresses are basically all in last name_first initial or similar format.
If Goatse (rofl) sold or profited from the script they wrote to harvest info they might have a problem. But all they did was publish a script, and a pretty simple one at that. You can go download a diagram of MasterLock bike locks, and if you are clever enough, use it to steal a bike. Does that mean the author of the diagram committed a crime? Nope. The law prevents against breaking into a secure system, sending spam, etc. It does not prevent against creative script writing.
