Question Massive FPS drop on games

Found an old rig and decided to get a new GPU for it to relive some old games again.

I bought a AMD RX 6650-XT and cheap RAM for it a few months ago and things were smooth but this past month suddenly get really low FPS on games like League and WoW dropping to 25 fps and can't even run Diablo 4.

I ran a user benchmark and its not looking so good:

That run looks normal, for such an old PC.

The 2x8GB RAM seems to be performing rather poorly and I don't have the option to XMP setting in my bios.
What revision is your MoBo?

Since there are 6x revisions of Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3. E.g latest revision, rev 6.0, DDR3 RAM speeds are 1066 Mhz, 1333 Mhz and OC/XMP 1600 Mhz.
Do note that when your RAM doesn't support 1600 Mhz, there is no XMP option for you to choose from.

That GPU isn't suited for such an old build.

GPU needs PCI-E 4.0 x8 to operate, while PCI-E x16 slot on your MoBo (if you have rev 6.0) is 2.0. And since GPU uses only x8 lanes, it is actually operating at PCI-E 2.0 x8.

It does work, since PCI-E revisions are backwards compatible, but you will loose performance. Performance drop isn't much though, 4% or so;

What the build is held back mostly, is due to the 12 years old FX-6300 CPU. That CPU, 12 years ago, was mid-tier. Now, it is FAR worse, compared to the current generation.

I think you have bloatware/malware or in general: software issue.

Easiest fix: format OS drive and make a clean Win installation again.
Since hardware wise, hardware is working as expected and there's nothing you can do, to improve things.

I did attempt to add another 2x8GB RAM giving total of 32GB but the PC wouldn't boot past bios.
That run shows you have been up for almost a day.

Try running ubm like I wrote above.

Yes haha that CPU seemed decent at the time, appreciate that its no longer the case.

After looking into what you said. I've bought a i5-12600K with a Gigabyte H610M H V3 motherboard to boot as the CPU is quite the bottleneck than I expected and definitely adding to some of the issues.

Did you buy new RAM as well? Since the DDR3 RAM you have, is not compatible with new MoBo.
And depending which version of the MoBo you bought, you need either DDR4 or DDR5 RAM.

Btw, H610 chipset is barebones and bottom-of-the-barrel. So, not advised for purchase. It does have cheap price though. B660 or H670 chipsets would've been better off, while Z690 chipset would be best for K-series CPU.

Nice catch! I thought I had DDR4, so looking to buy RAM now any recommendations?

Notice K series don't come with CPU coolers so looking at those as well.

Yeah chose the H610 purely on price as I will probably be giving this away to a family member. Having said that seen a Gigabyte B760M for £20 difference. Wondering if it's worth the difference to cancel.

Best: MoBo memory QVL list.

Memory QVL contains these RAM modules that Gigabyte itself has tested and confirmed working.
For DDR4, good RAM frequency to use would be 3000 Mhz. Or 3200 Mhz, which is max what that MoBo supports speed wise.

Amount wise, 2x 8GB (16 GB) is solid today. Unless you play latest AAA titles, then 32 GB total would be better. And for 3D render and workstation use, i wouldn't look below 64 GB. Latter is also max what that MoBo supports RAM capacity wise.

All-in-all, if you want RAM to work 3000/3200 Mhz, best to pick one from memory QVL list. But if you don't care fast speeds and are happy running RAM at JEDEC default of 2133/2400/2666 Mhz, then it doesn't matter which DDR4 RAM you buy.

Notice K series don't come with CPU coolers so looking at those as well.

Note: CPU cooler is 155mm tall and make sure your PC case has enough clearance. If not, tell what the PC case clearance is and i'll look another CPU cooler for you.

There are MANY Gigabyte MoBos that start with B760M naming. Since i don't know which one you are looking at, i took one random B760M MoBo with DDR4 support as comparison,

B760 chipset, for one, supports much faster RAM frequency than H610 chipset. B760 also has faster speed USB ports and overall, more stuff on MoBo itself. Just read the comparison.

What i linked, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is one of the best big-boy (big-sized) air coolers currently out there. And due to it's price, it's also value king.

What you linked, is cheap 92mm Cooler Master H410R cooler, that is below average in performance. Even when you'd have two of these Cooler Master H410R coolers, them combined will not be equal to the 120 SE performance with dual 120mm fans and twin towers.

Like i said, unless you have less than 155mm CPU cooler clearance in your PC case, there is no other reason, as of why, not to get 120 SE (or it's variants).

Now, if you do have less than 155mm CPU cooler clearance (e.g CM H410R is 136mm tall), then Thermalright Peerless Assassin 90 SE would be much better choice (at 110mm tall, but also twin tower). Comes in 3 color variants (black, chrome/gray, white),

When it comes to CPU cooler, it is always better to get best (or nigh-best) CPU cooler, since this gives you a lot more thermal headroom and better cooling to the CPU, than average (or below average) CPU cooler.

Ok again the difference in price is minimal for the difference in performance. So went ahead and got the RGB one which should be nice addition!

Case has 160mm cooler height which is just about enough, looking to put this build together on the weekend, looking a lot better than what I would have ended up with. Cheers

but didn't realize the Samsung PM961 from my old laptop is that much faster will switch over.
Well, yeah, PM961 is PCI-E 3.0 M.2 NVMe SSD, while 870 Evo is SATA SSD.
Speed diff (on benchmarks) is more than double,

But in real life, i doubt you can tell a diff. Maybe Win boot up is 1-2 seconds faster.
Only way, in real life, to tell a diff, outside of benchmark numbers, is when you move large files. There, the much higher read/write speeds will show.
