Maxtor basic xp problem

My computer will no longer open my 160GBMaxtorPortable external hard drive.
I'm sure its to do with a recent XP update. But I can't work out how to fix it. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

try the ext drive on a different computer to make sure it will operate properly
Those finicky drive doors are known to fail
