Mechwarrior and "robots"

I never ceases to burn me up when someone calls battlemechs "robots". A robot is a mechanical device with some type of artificial intelligence and operates without human involvement. Robby the robot was a robot, the robot from Lost in Space was a robot, the automated gizmos that build cars are industrial robots. Is a tank like the M1 Abrams a robot? No, why? Because it has a human crew to operate it. A battlemech requires a pilot just like a tank needs a crew. The only difference between a tank and a battlemech is a tank has treads and a battlemech has legs. I wish reviewers who cover BattleTech games would stop referring to mechs as robots. I know this post is going to sound silly to some, but I have been playing battletech since it came out as a board game and have painted hundreds of miniatures. I find it annoying when people review something and don't really understand what it is they are reviewing.

so what about "<A HREF="http://www.battlebots.com/" target="_new">battle bots</A>" or "<A HREF="http://www.robotwars.com/" target="_new">robot wars</A>", they are considered to be robots, even though they are operated by one or more humans.

I get what you're saying, but the need to include this humored me =p.

Tanks are vehicles.
Mechs are (with the exception of power rangers and such) one-person operated, two-legged (i think), mobile... hey mechs are vehicles too, LOL.

So now we can call mechs robot-vechiles! LOL

j/k, well that was fun, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I think the last statement made really hit the mark, the reviewer obviously ONLY played the game.
I would have enjoyed the article a bit more if it had been written by someone who is a 'mech.

I have been playing MW since the original, I got my hands on it in 1990, I even helped bring the change about for MW2, (with better targeting, graphics and customizable mechs.) The one thing I really did not like about the article was his need for a joy stick. What a newbie! I purchased a MS forcefeedback joystick just for MW3, used it twice, every other time I have played ( read as time in months, close to a year of play time) it has been keyboard/mouse, and the mouse only came after playing MW online in 1992/93, but to each his own. Thats fine.

Now in the article Jérome wrote: "...a simulator, just like the rest." D.F.A. -nuff said.

TimJ.

I totally agree with you. Just like calling the engine of a car a "motor".

Hmm... Come to think of it, with the death/accident ratio here in Germany we can actually call automobiles battlemechs! Once a car gets into an accident, especially on the Autobahn you can pretty much scrap it.

I've got a light, Munich-based, modified, SISE, 4chambered non-nuclear, 140HP, has a 5-speed transmission w/Autoshutdown @6300RPM, low-profiled, night camouflaged (black), wide-tracked (245/55R16V), onboard communication network (Kenwood CDR, and Motorola telephone)no navigation, still have the old tracking system built in (road Atlas) with removable interlock (trailer hitch). Twin Xenon-blue Laser 55W/65W mini-beams and 4 IR markers (taillights).

The PPC will be installed this coming April.

I belong to the E36 Series 318i Light Lance unit on Planet BMW.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to start a WAR with anyone. Just stating facts.

Forget the terminology and just enjoy the game!!! All the MechWarrior games (including MechAssault for XBOX) are lots of fun!!!

Intelligence is not merely the wealth of knowledge but the sum of perception, wisdom, and knowledge.

i didn't like #3, it was funny to see how they copensate for it though. With mech4, they limited the game to use like 4 buttons instead of the whole keyboard.

I've only played the demo version so I really don't know too much about it. I do like the graphics though. It's fantastic compared to the older versions.
