Metal Back Plate Problem!

I was so impressed with the 30C degree temp drop using the CoolerMaster V8 compared to the Rosewill RCX-Z775 that I purchased a 2nd V8 for my SkullTrail Rig. I put it in today and fired it up; fans spun, lights flickered and it died. Did I finally overpower my 1k PSU? Did I connect something wrong? Did I expose my sensitive mobo to the deadly static electricity in my office? I'm guessing no because I took both V8's off and it fired right up, so I am assuming one of the metal back plates is grounding out my my mobo. The problem is I don't remeber which one was the new one and a quick visual inspection showed no metal on metal contact.

So outside of putting some electrical tape over the backplate to help insulate it from my mobo, is there any thing else I could be missing? The metal back plate has an insulated tape on it but I am assuming that I might have overtightened it or something, I don't know, WTF?

There should have been some sort of insulation covering the side of the metal back plate that comes in contact with the bottom of the motherboard. Sometimes it looks like black plastic or rubber. Sometimes it looks like clear plastic film. It varies among manufacturers.

Which motherboard do you have?

D5400XS mobo, yes the back plate had insulation but I am thinking I must have overtightened it and exposed the metal or the plate is contacting the mobo tray. I have to check tomorrow when I get to the office but it seems like I might be missing something.

Not that I heard of. It's possible the mobo maker had a too long pin sticking out of the back of the mobo. Maybe a capacitor? Look at the bottom of the mobo from a sideways angle and use something flat. Bet something is sticking out a bit higher than others. Could be a blob of solder off a chip pin, dunno.

If you use elec tape and tighten it up, the offending solder pin might be sharp enough to go right through the elec tape. So elc tape might not help.
