Metal Backing Plates for CPU coolers.

I'm using a Kestrel King II CPU cooler on my Athalon FX-53 chip and ASUS A8v Deluxe MoBo. Now I installed the CPU cooler on the plastic retention clip already on the MoBo. Now I learn (sorry I didn't know) that there's supposed to be a metal backing plate on the back of the MoBo to "help support the weight of any heavy cpu coolers?". This was NOT explained in the installation manual and I couldn't figure out what the thing was for so it's sitting with the other left over stuff.

I went to a website on coolers and saw what these backing plates are supposed to do. Are they between the MoBo and the tray? Between the tray and the case? Do they need to be installed prior to cpu installation? If so why didn't anyone let me know.

Am I risking my Mobo, by NOT having this bracket installed? Do I need to do it now?

Sorry, I just learned of this whole thing and any help would be appreciated.

If the cooler needed a backing plate it would have come with one. The A64 Speeze heatsinks don't have one either. The heavy copper 1U Opteron sinks come with one and spring-loaded tensioners too. Don't worry about it.

Unh, this fan CAME witha backing plate, but I didn't install it. But it seems to be running fine and vertical without one.

That the backing plate was not detailed in the installation instructions ANYWHERE!!!! And for the life of me I didn't know what it was! Nor is it's installation detailed on the Spire website!!!! It's just this piece of aluminum sittin there. When I go to put in my new graphics card perhaps I'll look into putting it on, right now I may leave it alone....

Sigh... just goes to show...
