Microphone doesn't work

when i hit the volume button in the Sounds and Multimedia in
Control Panel, I got the following error message:-
There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices
from the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the control panel.

What's that mean? What is a mixer device?
