There is no one thing to rule all, would be too much complicated. Instead, devices (can) communicate each other to form a great thing. Their user interface should be fitted specifically for the devices role.

However, you can always try MS, in the end consumer is still the jury to judge what is best for us.

I feel that Microsoft is making Windows 8 like it is for a reason. If it fails for desktops, then can make Windows 9 where the tablet would fork from 8, and the PC would fork from 9.

I also feel that PC+ is the way to go, but nobody has it right. I do feel that Mac OSX Lion is a sign that Apple feels that the desktop/laptop convergence is coming. I also feel that there isn't a tablet OS out there. It's either a tablet running a PC OS or a tablet running a modified cell phone OS.

[citation][nom]johnsonma[/nom]A universal OS is the most logical outcome of the multiple branch's of technology. It will provide the easiest route for compatibility between devices and the apps on those devices. That is the goal here right? Once the mobile hardware tech is a little more advanced I doubt that there will be any issues with a one "OS to rule them all" approach.?[/citation]

win8 is not universal os, there are two types of ui that glued together.
the right universal os (if that any) is there only one type of ui that can consistenly satisfied all the devices role.

[citation][nom]twelch82[/nom]It should be one OS, with different interfaces based on the way you interact with it. Trying to force everything to use one interface when the method of interaction is significantly different is only going to result in an inferior experience on every device. MS is about to figure this out with Windows 8.[/citation]
I couldn't agree more. Once x86 processors get more popular in smartphones and tablets MS could bring the x86 ecosystem for compatibility but certain interface changes must be applied for neither are we to bear with smudgy touch screen on a TV nor are we to use mouse on a smartphone.

Unfortunatley

One OS for all platforms is great in theory but will be a disaster in execution.

The sheer number of systems and configurations makes one OS a disaster. A desktop/laptop has a much more powerful CPU/GPU compared to a tablet/phone. Furthermore the number of drivers will increase, and finally, backwards compatibility? You can still run old programs on Windows PCs and companies still look for that. How are they going to shoe horn that into an OS that will fit everything?

If Apple were to even try that with their controlled fixed set of hardware, they would be hard placed to do so. There is an article when they considered a full OS X for the iPhone and they decided on iOS and OS X with similar features but a smaller tighter OS for mobile products.

The PC/tablet realm has too many hardware manufacturers with varying systems to be able to execute it properly without bloated software and a million drivers.

Obnoxious platform holy war started by commenters above aside - Time will tell if they can pull it off - They sure have the money.

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]i think he ment to say samsung and Intel make great hardware for apple products LOL[/citation]
There is some truth to that, but the main idea is that Apple orders slightly customized (improved) parts, but in large quantities, so they can release their finished products earlier than the competition and gain an unfair advantage in the market.
Personally I'm not an Apple fan, and I think the computer industry would be just fine without Apple. It would have been much better if Steve Jobs made open sourced gadget designs for the industry, much like the IBM hardware standards, except in design.

Now now, come on... don't bash o Apple too hard, to the people saying Apple is not as convenient and flexible as a PC, come on that's not true. I have built a 3000$ ivy bridge, GTX 690 DREAM gaming computer but I still run into many many errors daily. Maybe it's just me, but...

Anyways, stop fighting Windows vs Mac, Linux shits on both of 'em, ha.

I hate when people use the term "best of both worlds" when describing tablets vs. other form factors.

It's just one world: COMPUTING.

That's the reason why what Microsoft is doing makes sense.

msft has done the same thing as apple, they just either won't admit it or don't realize it. apple has a desktop OS, mac OSX, and a mobile OS, iOS. msft has their desktop OS, windows 7, and their newly created mobile OS, metro. essentially what microsoft has done splice metro with windows 7 and simply call it windows 8. even their name for the new "era" is basically the same. "post-PC" and "PC+" mean the same thing, it's just the semantics are different.

in the end, the rhetoric doesn't matter. what matters is that companies compete, and are driven to innovate new technology that enhance the lives of consumers.

[citation][nom]tlm man[/nom]I wholeheartedly agree with Microsoft that mobile devices simply complement the desktop PC and that it makes sense to have a single OS that will support multiple platforms. That said, the OS needs to be designed to work appropriately on all platforms and support multiple inputs and interfaces. If you design the OS to run on all platforms yet the interface obviously favors a single platform and alienates users by forcing them to conform to a format unfit for their own platform, it would be idiotic not to expect backlash from your user base.See what I did there, MS?[/citation]

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1

[citation][nom]Marcus52[/nom]There should also be more ways to use Metro besides as full-screen replacement for the Start menu, and more ways to customize it.If you aren't using Win 8 strictly because you don't like Metro though, you are really cutting your nose off to spite your face. It can be a very minor part of your Win 8 experience if you just give it a chance.[/citation] You said there should be more ways to use metro, then say we should give it a chance...

Win8 was given a chance... metro sucks donkey balls. It doesn't improve anything. Its quite stupid.

[citation][nom]johnsonma[/nom]If Apple would go this route maybe the district I work for wouldn't have such an issue finding a way to remotely manage iPads. They have a remote management app but the second you open a different app it closes the previous one and ends the session, how completely worthless it that?[/citation] There is something wrong with the app or its settings. It would be a completely useless product if it shuts down every time you do anything else, no?

iPads do multi-task. You can play music, games and internet at the same time... even if you can't see everything at the same time. Call tech support.

[citation][nom]jacekring[/nom]What hardware do they (apple) exactly design????
Did they design the processor? NO
Did they design the motherboard? NO
Did they design the screen? NO
Did they design the network card? NO
Did they design the Ram chips? NO
Did they design the video card? NO
So NO they do NOT design hardware. Does HP design hardware? YES, they own PATENTS for hardware.
Does Dell design hardware? Not that I know of
Does Lenovo design hardware? Not that I know of[/citation] If you do not know what you are talking about, perhaps you should not say stupid things.

No PC company designs the CPUs, monitors, ram chips, etc, pretty much. Why would they? With that, HP isn't a hardware company (it is). Now, Apple does own a CPU company (not for their Macs or iPhones). In the OLD days, Commodore (C=64 / Amiga) made the 6502 CPU used in their own computers as well as Apple, etc... they also design and made their own GPU/audio/controller chips. But in todays world, there is no need to do that. Why re-design the RAM chip when there are standard companies already making them?

So yes, Apple DOES design their products, they design the mobo and work with FOXCONN to make sure the final product works. network card? What network card? Its a dinky little generic chip. RAM, whoever has the best price... Video card? Maybe or a chip - but its from a supplier, no different from ANY OTHER computer comapny.

Dell designs the case and spec the boards. A dell mobo will not be the same as an HP board, even if they come from the same Chinese factory. Lenovo *DOES* design their own computers. They have patents, etc.

Apple *IS* a hardware company. What would you call them... a software company?

[citation][nom]jacekring[/nom]
They just style it and assemble it, that's different.Hardware designers? Intel, AMD, Asus, Gigabyte, Crucial, etc, etc.

Also wanted to mention that FOXCONN does NOT design hardware either. They merely assemble it for retailers.[/citation]
Already posted it. AMD, intel, etc are component/manufacture companies. They don't sell computers and rarely deal with the general public.

Okay.... so with your stupidity... Apple and FOXCONN does not design hardware... they just magiclly appear out of thin air?

Foxconn Does some design work - it all depends on the projects. They make motherboards (including for intel), other parts and assemble the final product, package it - stick it in a containers that get shipped all over the world.

ASUS became a hardware company when they started making full blown computers (notebooks / netbooks / tablets) - while still being a component company.

[citation][nom]KupuAnd1[/nom]I'm not with Microsoft nor Apple.....I'm with Google's philosophy. You like Apple? We are there! You like Microsoft? We are there! You like linux? We are there! You don't like any of the above...we got Chrome OS!The only downside is privacy but with Skydrive and iCloud is just the same issue![/citation]
Privacy is the only downside? How about that required internet connection?

"Apple is NOT a hardware company!"

"Apple IS a hardware company!"

If you want a pointless debate, this is a good candidate. What a complete waste of comment space (that is, our reading time) it's been. :-/

Most "computer" companies are just shells that operate as a brand. Their manufacturing and support wings are often contracted out. Apple is no different that most other companies. Apple and Sony are more alike than not. Sony and Apple both have retail fronts and big brands. Both contract out their support and manufacturing to third-parties. The only part of the business that operates out of every computer company brand is the executive board, and even then, you're often talking about major shareholders and sometimes holding co.'s controlling the business.

[citation][nom]mouse24[/nom]"Apple makes great hardware," Turner admitted.Excuse me, what? Apple does not make hardware, at all. I bet he thinks he is getting a faster pc since it has the mac logo on it also...haha, regardless it was probably just a lapse in thinking.[/citation]
Your a tool! Trying to be a smart ass and getting it so very wrong. Apple do make hardware! You know all those macs and iPhones, they happen to be considered hardware buddy. See how it sounds to have your head so far up your own ass. When he said Apple make great hardware, this is exactly what he was clearly referring to. You don't need to manufacture every component to be a hardware company. Apple is in the hardware business, that is what they do. They're not a manufacturing company or a software company. They make there money from selling there own hardware products they produce not anyone else's like your trying to smugly make out. Manufacturing is just a small part of making a product. Anything sold with an Apple logo is made by Apple, pretty straight forward you'd think. Also back to your smart ass comment about a mac logo making something faster. Your probably trying to refer to the Apple logo I assume. But please enlighten me, where does one find a pc with a mac logo on it?

[citation][nom]jacekring[/nom]What hardware do they exactly design???? Did they design the processor? NODid they design the motherboard? NODid they design the screen? They just style it and assemble it, that's different.Hardware designers? Intel, AMD, Asus, Gigabyte, Crucial, etc, etc.[/citation]
What are you on about! You and so many people on these forums are clueless stooges! Is a Mac computer considered hardware, yes. Do you hold an iPhone in your hand, yes. So what the fuck are you exactly trying to argue? So stupid!

[citation][nom]ausvip3r[/nom]What are you on about! You and so many people on these forums are clueless stooges! Is a Mac computer considered hardware, yes. Do you hold an iPhone in your hand, yes. So what the fuck are you exactly trying to argue? So stupid![/citation]

Agreed!

/Sarcasm

The iPhone wasn't designed... It was divined from hell!!
The Mac wasn't designed... It was divined from hell!!

You are a heretic for even mentioning them!!! BURRRRNNNN!!!

/Sarcasm

If Apple isn't a hardware company, then neither is Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony, and the list goes on...

All of these companies design their hardware using components, such as screens, drives, CPUs, GPUs, daughter cards, even motherboards from other sources.

No one argues you hate Apple, but your hate blinds you to even the most obvious facts...

No company builds their hardware fully. They design the system (phone/tablet/computer/widget) using components.

Attacking Apple or for that matter Microsoft, saying they don't design their hardware is direct indication of your lack of understanding of what "Design" means.

[citation][nom]TEAMSWITCHER[/nom]I think of it more like keeping my money and telling Microsoft to go to hell. Metro isn't just a replacement for the Start Screen, it's the future replacement for the entire Windows experience. If successful, there will be no desktop, no moveable/resizeable windows, and no task bar. They are bastardizing their flagship product to leverage it's popularity against the latest threat to their monopoly - the iPad. And ALL desktop Windows users must endure a huge downgrade in the process. Have you seen the "Mission Control" feature in OS X Lion? It's an awesome Multiple Desktop window manager and application switcher. Mac users got that feature a year ago, and Windows 8 has nothing even close to it. What does MS do for desktop users - repackage existing Explorer functions into a Ribbon - what a ridiculous waste of time! I swear they are not even trying! I want Windows 8 to fail! Microsoft needs to separate the Tablet and Desktop experience so that each may be an advanced accordingly. And they better do it soon. I'll stick with Windows 7 as long as I can, but damn those Macs are starting to look damn good compared to the steaming pile of dog crap that is Windows 8.[/citation]

Here here!

One OS, for so many platforms, would be a UI disaster...
"Touch Screen, no touch screen, mouse, keyboard, it does it all!!"

One OS, with all the drivers, would be bloated and inefficient...
"Does my 8 year old printer still work??"

One OS, shoehorning backwards compatibility into every device is a horrible compromise...
"It needs to be able to run IE 7"

I love Windows 7 flaws, and all and I look forward to improvements in Windows 8, but making an OS that is designed specifically for it's niche sounds a lot more logical than building a minivan-sportscar-scooter-motorcycle.

according to this guy apple does 😀

[citation][nom]whiteodian[/nom]I like Microsoft's approach to the different platforms. I'm all for cross-platform compatibility.[/citation]
Really? And how do you prefer it - to run a phone OS on your desktop, or a server one on your phone?
Well, more or less you have your answer then, but not from MS, it's called Linux. :)
