@ amk-aka-phantom

Then what is it you use your computer for? Because if your surfing the web with a Windows system and are not using IE that you have just duplicated a function that comes with Windows.

[citation][nom]soccerdocks[/nom]The one thing that I want to make sure they add is that it will keep copying other files in the background when it detects duplicate file names.[/citation]

This. And also keep copying other files if one is not readable.
I've had the annoying situation where I have left something large copying overnight and in the morning, nothing much has happened because one file screwed up and stopped the copying.

You have just proved my point thank you.

You could use IE to surf the web just fine, but you choose to use a third party piece of software because it suits your needs better.

At the basic level IE and Fire Fox are the same thing, web browsers yet you went looking for something that you though was better than IE. It does not change the fact that you duplicated a function/program that came built into Windows.

I rest my case, start laughing at yourself.

I knew you're gonna say that! Thing is, Total Commander does NOT bring anything new, while FF does.

[citation][nom]amk-aka-phantom[/nom]Go back to your Linux with its single root file system. Total Commander = bloatware for people who can't learn to manage their files and drag & drop properly.[/citation]

PCMag defines bloatware as follows:

Definition of: bloatware

(1) Applications that are overloaded with features. See software bloat and wares.

(2) Myriad applications pre-installed on a PC by the vendor. Many PC manufacturers are paid by software vendors to pre-install lite versions of their products on the PCs they sell. In addition, some of these applications load at startup, wasting memory and providing a potential for conflict with other applications. For a fee, some retailers offer to rid the new PC of bloatware for their customers.

TC does not fall under either category. And btw, you can drag-and-drop in it; it's just less productive to do so when you have to compare / weed out large directories. What it is, is a specialized tool for file operations, that is based on the familiar two-panel approach found in popular managers of yore, which happens to work really well even by today's standards.

For a user accustomed to efficiently working with two panels, going back to "My Computer" is quite sad.

God no!
Firefox has support for lots an lots of things that IE just can't do.

I like all of it, but I know that it would be removed on Windows 9 because many users are too dumb to understand it, and Microsoft is too dumb to enable those options on professional versions, and making non default on home versions. Like it did on former windows.

I would also like to see queueing different copy operations, so that when one ends the next is automatically 'un-paused'.

this would be very helpful for me. i manage terabytes of files moving them among drives for backups sync etc etc. something like this would allow me to 'set it n forget it'

[citation][nom]danwat1234[/nom]Hopefully when I'm copying a large collection of files, and it encounters a file or folder that has too long of a path (more than 255 characters?), it won't just say that the destination path is too long and the only button is the "ok" button and then it cancels the rest of the transfer, like it does in windows 7!? That is why I use total commander for complex transfers.[/citation]

This is becoming a huge issue for me as well. Working for a medium sized firm and trying to "encourage" users to limit their folder lengths and such--but everyone knows how well that works. The ~255 character limit is absolutely ridiculous not because it is there but the way it was implemented. Somehow the file system should prevent 255 char. limits in files so that when copying file shares we don't run into so many problems opening them from the local machine and such. An outright extension of the limit built in to the API would be better though.

For all of you saying that MS is just copying a feature of another operating system need to think about what you are saying. If people didn't copy each other than there would only be one OS Manufacturer with a graphical UI, otherwise they would be copying! And there could only be one DOS-based one else that would be copying too. Same with copy, paste, etc.

Are you saying that great features should be left out of the OS cause someone else has something similar? That is thinking backwards. Let them pay royalties, etc. and get on with it.

I like the Win 7 Libraries feature, for I love the way you can see all your files spanned across the 5 hard drives I have in my system. (Although Win 8 I'm doing a NAS or JBOD solution). I still to date like having control over what is stored on my individual harddrives, for I'd hate to see a JBOD failure and lose the 1 file that is scattered "somewhere"

This is why I may just go with a NAS solution, even if xfer speeds are slower, I don't care, for most of the use of those drives are for "Torrent" trickling, and playback via USB copy to media player.

Now that I am straying away from my original topic, I wish to say, I hope Win 8 takes the library feature to a new level, and allows us to remove content from the library without having to actually delete the files physically! lol @==> genius MS.

@bourgeoisdude and danwat1234 : I share your pain on a daily basis. Naming your folder "Meeting reports of the committee on Integrated Risk Management - April 1st, 2011 to August 28, 2011", which is itself located in the "Committee on Integrated Risk Management" folder, is NOT file-system friendly!

Sharepoint FTW.

Other than that, I'm happy to see a refresh and new features to the file copy system.

Finally, MS improved an aspect of Windows that much needed improvement. Hopefully, they will implement some way to setup defaults rather than prompting in the middle of a 12 hour long file copy operations. Areas need to include: read-only, hidden and system, network failure. Also, they need to do something about that bug where you can't delete a file because it believes something across the network is still holding it. Also some realtime queueing and priority management would be nice (more than just a plain pause button). Also maybe a setting to "never see error", but just keep "retrying" and not just show the hourglass, but informative text describing what it is trying to do and what is the potential holdup.

All you people with pron collections know where I am coming from.

how about simply just adding file type recognition...
large media files xfer in larger chunks
- so less HDD head thrashing, which these mechanical drives are so bad at...

and same for copying multpile files from the same drive (something that normall Much more than halves the xfer for that amount of data), bigger chuncks from each file = less head movement so faster xfer

you get the idea :)

I don't care about fancy graphs and previews, which Win7 already does(preview). When I copy a big batch I just want the ability to auto rename by each or all and for locked files to NOT cancel an entire file transfer.

That's why I use Teracopy, no stupid frills and graphs, just function and performance.

Wow, 11 years to make a fancy GUI over the ROBOCOPY and XCOPY!!!!

Ops, there is also an invention - PAUSE button!!!!! (taken from Mozilla?)

Finaly when the ssd technology is starting and the hdd technology is dieing, now there are no reason to do this
