[citation][nom]schmich[/nom]As much as I use Win7 I think MS should get the shitter for renaming the OS with "7" when it clearly is 6.1. It's just like NVidia and their cards: they take the card, upgrade/enhance a little and give a completely new name so the people think it's a completely new product. It's also funny how they know screwed up the product name relation with the OS version name. Eg. Windows 8 will actually be Windows 7.0[/citation]
So many companies do this so why complain? Car companies especially release the next year of upcoming vehicles the year prior...2010 models released in 2009...

[citation][nom]Marco925[/nom]Meh, I'll stick with my XP copy. it still runs just fine, and I have my classic start menu/Classic interface in which i Love.[/citation]
Right on, as for all the MS troll fanboys on this site, kiss my ass.

[citation][nom]tat2demon[/nom]Eh, it'll work for a week, then someone will find another crack. The never ending cycle. Sometimes you have to wonder if its worth the trouble of trying to beat the hackers.[/citation]
Yeah, we should also stop fighting crime. I mean, some other criminals are gonna take the place of the one we arrest anyway. We should also stop taking care of our health. We're just going to be sick sooner or later.

Why bother?

lol don't they offer Windows 7 Starter for free? I wonder what they are thinking?

No free is way too much money, I am going to put my computer at risk of viruses and download an unstable version of Windows 7.

"It's not the $110-$150 thats a problem for them most people as I feel that If you bought a copy of XP or any other windows system for $X amount then like most software you just update to the next version free! Do you think HP would sell alot of printers if you had to buy the update for the software too! All windows is,is a base program they keep changing and adding things too, cause they just now figured out how to make it look good it's probably still got the code from 3.1 in it just added more code to it. If you crapped out a terd and I polished for a week would you buy it from me cause I gave it a new look?"

I don't follow that argument though. XP is almost 10 years old! Although Win 7 is based on Vista, making the jump from XP to Win 7 is a completely different OS and not just a service pack or cosmetic change. I think $110 for OEM Home Premium 64 bit is a fair price. Personally, I think you should get full support for that price but OEM is fine for most users. I will be making the jump in another 2-3 months to Win 7 but I don't have a problem spending that amount for an OS that will be around for 4 years (at least).

My 2 cents.

if it really is totally optional, no big deal. if it's not optional, it will annoy some noobs who don't know anything, or anyone else who has a crappy pirate activation menthod. nothing that concerns me really, but...

[citation][nom]doc70[/nom]Once it validated your copy as legit, why does it need to run again afterward? After all, if your copy was validated as genuine, why would you want to run any activation exploits on your legit installation? The reason does not stand any logic, that's why I suspect ulterior motives in pushing this update. And that's why I will avoid it, even though my installation is genuine. I don't like sneaky stuff. MS has to give us the real reason why this app will continue to "phone home" long after it's purpose has been accomplished.[/citation]

+1 to this.

I think the reason is that people may succeed in genuinly activate their not-so-genuine Windows. With such a patch, MS can retry their checks with new counter-measures once they discover new ways to bypass the validation process.
[citation][nom]mayne92[/nom]As a genuine Win7 user, I still won't be downloading this patch. I've had to reactivate my OS 3 times since it's official release...motherboard died and install software twice that after reboot said "recent hardware changes have been made". I'm afraid there may become a day that I can't reactivate it and will need to maintain my rightful possession of this software...[/citation]
It will happen. You'll then have to call technical support to activate Windows by phone to justify the frequent activations. However, the "service" is quick and friendly.

This is funny. You don't have to download this patch, which will allow you to continue to get other patches and this one is optional.

Just goes to prove how this "validation" stuff doesn't really work. Besides, don't you think the bad guys will figure out another way to bypass this latest fix?

This does nothing but give the pirates another challenge to break and yet, it sticks it to the legit users.

[citation][nom]ubernoobie[/nom]I just wish people actually buy windows 7, It's actually worth buying since performance of xp with interface of vista[/citation]

I hate the Vista/7 interface it's a much bigger pain to navigate and access things compared to XP

The activation codes are based on algorithms. If the algorithm is lets say hypothetically: x(x-1) and u put x=4 the activation for that version would be 4(4-1) 4(3) or 12. There can be an unlimited amount of codes out there. If windows finds a code that they haven't even sold or even used then they know its a fake. All the update is is an updated check of codes that don't exist.

I think that users who purchased Vista should receive free W7 copies of identical level. They did it for the pre-launch, but W7 should be the companies apology for Vista's shortcomings. I think piracy has helped W7, everyone that I know that has "obtained" W7 has had nothing but good things to say about it. It encouraged me to buy it myself, but I just wish I hadn't bought Vista Ultimate 6 months prior 🙁

Microsoft needs to completely revamp their windows copy protection. Pirates right now are the only folks enjoying problem free experiences I think. I've had no problems on my main pc, but I purchased two HP laptops (directly from HP) this Christmas for my kids. Both have received pop ups twice (that's two times on each laptop) requiring me to telephone Microsoft and enter the product key for "manual" activation. I paid for the software, why do I constantly have to prove it? The problem here isn't the pirates, they're not bothering me any. The problem is the unreliable methods MS are choosing to use for license authentication. To be honest, I wish I knew where to find one of these activation hacks for the laptops so I wouldn't have to go through the hassle again.

Incorrect! Anyone with MAK or KMS license keys is having a very easy time as well.

Right firstly get this straight! Im no pirate just bought windows 7 and upgraded two vista pc also new to windows 7 as i hated vista ! now my hp pc`s all come pre activated , are bone fide legit and all above board so why the hell should i have to proove that they are ok? hp plc dont ship pirated windows ! they would be in deep trouble with microsoft if they did, have you ever had problems with wga? well i did as did many others , so why should this lovely new update be any different , every pc is unique with its own quirks etc and you can damm well bet that some poor sod usually me will end up failing the test because of some system irregulaities that micro pain hasnt thought of when programming this junk! so whether youre legit or not is irrelevant be warned you could find yourself branded a tea leaf ( tief) even when your not!
