I have found that for long time users of the old version of Office, the Ribbon was hell. Nothing was where it WAS...

That doesn't mean that wasn't where they were SUPPOSED TO BE... The structure of MOST of the objects in the Ribbon are actually organized in a much more logical format. The categories corresponded, in general, much better than in the bloated file menu that just had new features dropped in over time from version to version, stemming all the way back to Word '95...

But it was so amusing to watch a grown man cry when, after upgrading from Office 2003 to 2007, he couldn't find out how to SAVE or PRINT...

I never liked XP... It was a step back, functionally, from Windows 2000. It was certainly better than Me, and was more 'stable' than 98. But it was slow and clunky... Not until we got dual core chips and 4 gigs of RAM did XP start to run smoothly... Everything was just a little quirky in XP. Drivers, WiFi connections, the Blutooth stack...
Windows 7 is awesome. It is as close to 'just works' as Windows has ever been. Its faster. It has a cleaner interface. Drivers install automatically 90% of the time. Connecting to WiFi works, out of the box.
The only advantage XP has over Windows 7 was the missing 'Up 1 Level' button in Explorer...

XP needs to die. Just like Flash.
 


Not true, I'm running XP SP2 on my 1.8 GHz single-core w/ 1GB RAM and it flies. It's actually faster than my Core i7-2600 rig in certain things. The rest is true: Wi-Fi sucks especially; the drivers are a pain and how do you like that, for instance: my Wi-Fi works flawlessly, but make a Skype call (chat is fine), and the connection rips like it wasn't there. Huh? What? Doesn't happen with Win7.

And who cares about that one button, it's replaced by the thing that replaced address bar... just click the previous item.

I hate ALL UIs that remove the standard menu bar (File/Edit/Tools/Help/etc) and replace it with something "simple" (according to them). So, Chrome, new Office, Ribbon, new Firefox (before you switch it to standard looks) - I hate them all. WTF is wrong with the menu bar? Oh, wait, I forgot, the poor office workers are afraid of buttons, so let's hide them... /facepalm... God, I hate "common users".
 
hopefully it can be removed, while having the buttons can be useful for some, it will mean more scrolling for everyone as the UI takes up more screen space

PS when it comes to files in view at ant given time, windows xp running the windows classic UI offers many more files in your view so you get less scrolling
 
Those ribbons are horribly executed, it doesn't matter if they've dumbed down the interface, because now it's just clunky, and even harder to find what you're looking for... Besides having those big picture buttons taking up space, most of the actual pictures don't exactly evoke thoughts of what the button actually does. Compound that with some odd omissions of things you'd want on the ribbon by default, and you've got a recipe for fail.

They could make it much better by adding a filter box to the ribbon, a la the Windows 7 control panel, but I don't see that happening.
 
I wonder if the "Development team" is going to modernize the DRIVE PROPERTIES Window?

That UGLY purple / Blue disc pie-chart is sooooooo Windows95. Yeah, really - its no different than Win95!

In Win 7, its the same menu look and feel pretty much since Windows95. its grey, its boring. It looks nothing like the Start menu of Windows7.
 
#1 problem with Windows Explorer - all current versions of windows default to HIDE Extensions of known file types. This is RETARDED. People get an email with a file picture.jpg.exe and it hides .EXE. Many people, even the dumbest know to avoid .EXE, yet Windows hides it...

It's actually harder than you think to find shit in Office 2007 with the ribbon. When they make all the buttons different sizes and aligned differently it's REALLY hard to scan them with your eyes and find them with a glance.

But the icon and descriptions would labeled a ~.jpg.EXE file as a "Application", so it still goes both ways.

And no... there are plenty of people WHO DON'T know about the .jpg.exe trick.
 
OK, I hate it because of the same reason I hate office suites and browsers and all the other applications that are receiving these "improvements." They are taking away my precious desktop space with a bunch of stupid toolbars and icons that I don't need. I need to be able to see a lot of files at once. What I don't need is a bunch of stupid pictures taking up space when I already know how to find this stuff in the menus.

Menus are cool.
They don't drop down unless you need them to. They don't take up desktop real estate. They never caused problems and were always easy to use. In fact, there still isn't a damn thing wrong with them.

It reminds me of when they were poking fun of Fox News on SNL, where they added a ticker at the bottom, then some other widgets on the screen, and then added other superflous stuff. Finally, Tim meadows looks into the camera and says,"hey, why don't we put a picture of the Terminator up there? Yeah, that's cool" which blots out most of the rest of the screen. Eventually you can't even see the reporters anymore or the footage they're talking about.

That was actually pretty hilarious but not funny on my desktop.
 
Give me back the power of XP file management, including the ability to turn off auto arrange, and I can get use to a stupid ribbon. I can't live with lower productivity and the extra work 7 requires for me to edit folders, move & save files, etc....
