All desktop icons, files and shortcuts are missing from the desktop after
login. All that is visible is the wallpaper. there is no taskbar. there is
nothing to select. Pressing tthe windows button does not bring up the menu.
The only thing I can do is to press ctrl alt and delete to bring up the task
manager. By selecting new task I can open some applications. The computer is
mainly used for business purposes but a young boy does play games regularly.
The computer is a fujitsu siemens, there is 512 megs of ram and the computer
is approx two years old. Access to the internet is via broadband, the users
would not be aware of the problems this can bring, viruses hackers etc.

Hi,

Sounds like Explorer.exe is not starting properly, or Explorer.exe is not
selected as the system 'shell'. Can you manually start Explorer.exe (This is
WINDOWS EXPLORER - NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) from the task manager ?

We'll need more detail about what has been done recently with the machine etc..
etc.. before too many useful comments will be able to be made.

Do you have a second monitor output that may be active in the dispay
properties but don’t have an actual monitor hooked up to it?

I went to play a quicktime movie once and "My Computer", "My
Network Places" and the Recycle Bin all suddenly went bye-bye. Turns
out they had actually moved over to the other desktop. But it took me
a while to realize it beause I don’t currently have my second monitor
hooked up, though it is still active and is also set to be placed to
the left of the main monitor.

Hi Lemurbot,

The originator of this thread did not say what OS he was using, if Win2k or XP,
then your suggestion is good one that I hadn't considered 🙂

Under NT4 'dual display' or 'multi-display' is fairly rare. SOME video card
manufacturers (eg: Matrox) do provide support for this however.
