Unfortunately, too many people who want to ban guns don't understand them. That's an issue today when people want to pass laws against things they don't understand.
Many people use a shotgun for home protection. Lower range, makes up for lack of aim in a high stress situation and once you hear one rack,you know exactly what that person has.
I used an AR-15 for coyotes, groundhogs, and other farm destroying animals. When you see a few groundhogs in one area muching on peas, it is kind of nice to be able to fire off a few shots before the things realize what's happening. Using a bolt action in that case, at best, I could get one. Especially on a coyote.. having the ability to do a quick follow up shot is essential if you somehow don't get a clean kill shot.
Blackpowder.. Yep, 50 cal round going down range. I'd be concerned about that o ne.
I think everyone should have a hunting rifle. But city people don't know anything about getting food. Groceries are always readily available until an emergency.
