Hi, I'm planning on building some 2 computers to put some old parts to use and save me some money.
I currently have a P4 cpu from a dell dimension 4300 bought in 2001 --> got the 256mb pc133 sdram a psu everything but the motherboard. I'm planning on setting up a linux server based on an article I found somewhere (can't remember the site right now) and seems that all the parts from the dell will do the work. I was thinking of getting a new mobo and a newer case with some extra HDD. I don't plan to OC it or do any gaming or video editing. Could any1 point me to any that will be compatible for the system and won't cost more than $70?

EDIT: I was thinking of getting another case and mobo since the dell one is for socket 478. Will I be able to get Socket 775 to fit that CPU? Clock speed is either 1.5ghz or 1.7ghz with a bus speed of 400mhz or 533mhz not sure thou. I know this is ver outdated and old but if I can manage to get some cheap replacements for it even on that same socket (478) I'll be able to work out my build.

EDIT: I was also planning on building an amd system with a spare athlon 64 x2 4200+ cpu. I will be needing everything else except for the HDDs (got a couple of 60gb) since all the parts come from a notebook. I need advice on a good mobo for it one that i can overclock and add some good video cards maybe some crossfire or sli so i can add some 3870s or 8800gts. Will I be able to use an AM2 or AM2+? Btw it comes from an alienware aurora m7700 the socket on that one is 939. My budget is about $500 for the whole system without the video cards but if it can be lowered that would be even better.

Please point me in the right direction asap.

Socket 478 will not fit in a socket 775 board. I actually found one board with both socket 478 and 775, but it took ddr memory. Check computer geeks or mwave for older socket 478 boards, all open box or refurbs; most are for ddr, not sdram. DDr is a pretty good deal right now, as low as $30 for 1 gig sticks. The 865 chipset is what I would buy for any socket 478. The chipset is more important than the board brand, in my opinion. For am2, look for an nvidia 780 board; the 780 onboard video is pretty good, but the board may not work with the tri or quad core phenoms. Most people don't need a quad core anyway for regular tasks. Newegg had one brand new 478 board recently, but it will take all of your $70 budget.

I think the chipset is 845 for the intel. I wouldn't mind using another socket mobo if its compatible with the mentioned processors. If I change the ram I would probly be able to use another socket mobo thats compatible with the 845 chipset right? I don't need more than 256mb of ram or more than a 700MHz processor for the linux server.
For the amd build I would like some more ram and upgradability for the future that's why I would like to upgrade from 939 socket mobo to a AM2 or AM2+.
I don't know about compatibility issues that might arise with the old intel dell or the amd athlon x2 4200+processor.
Will I be able to put p4 in a socket 775? and a athlon x2 4200+ in a am2 am2+? I will look more into the chipset because I'm not really sure about the intel since my version is the one that came with windows me...
The amd should be easy to find thou...

No. They all have different sockets or memory requirements. 939 works with ddr only; am2 with ddr2 only; 478 won't fit in a 775 socket; For a server, I suggest a celeron 430 (35 watts) with Newegg open box 945 board; they also have a pcchips cheapo board for $30 after rebate new. And ddr2 is very cheap; yesterday newegg had some crucial 2 gigs for $5 after rebate, which sold out in minutes.

Absolutely not. The 939 cpu cannot be used in am2/am2+ socket thus u need to by a new cpu.

Considering that u need an overclock budget cpu, I suggest this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103194
= $76.99

and yeah u need to buy a separate cooler for that cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106088
=$24.99

This motherboard has the latest technologies for ur am2 socket cpu with crossfire
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130172
=$94.99

Psu that have 3 +12rail. Should be enough if u want to crossfire later.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171023
=$119.99

2gb are enough for todays gaming/applications. These are one great cheap overclocking ram (considering ur budget):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146673
=$51.99

Total= $368.95

Add a little more for ur graphic card. And I really really suggest that take a hd 4850 and crossfire it later.

Good luck.

All right i got:
mobo = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813185107
cpu = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116039
ram = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134044
HDD = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152102
I'll have to look for a case locally since shipping is to expensive to PR
I have an old generic psu but it's 480W... which one would u guys recommend? I'm using the integrated graphics in mobo and will add a dvd rw to the server.
Price will be aproximately $275 without case n psu

Grizz86 great suggestions but I might wait until I have some more money to build the other system for now, since the server is going to take more money than i previously expected.
