I'm working wtih a Windows XP Home Gateway computer that's
only a few months old. It went down because of a power outage.
Now when I try to dial the ISP or even Query the modem on the
modem's Diagnostic tab the computer does a hard reset. Nothing
else seems to have any problems.

I'd like to try reinstalling the drivers for the modem, but
I couldn't find the any modem drivers for this computer on
Gateway's support section on their site. The modem is a
"SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP." Where can I find the
drivers for that modem?

If reinstalling the drivers doesn't fix the problem, will I
be able to get it replaced by Gateway? Because I need it
back ASAP, could I just buy my own new modem and put it in
without voiding Gateway's warranty on the computer? Thanks
for any info you can give me.

The drivers should be on the driver disk that came with your new computer
(or included in the special reload section of the hard drive) check your
documentation for the location since you didn't specify what system you had.

If the modem turns out to be the problem at least try to get Gateway to swap
it out, ie. call technical support (but good luck from what I've seen on
recent postings to this group. Otherwise you can purchase a replacement
modem for amazingly few dollars at your local office supply/computer
store/electronics store (it will include the necessary driver software).

The Windows XP CD might have the drivers on it, check there too. If this
happened after a power failure it probably did fry the modem, that happened
to me once. If you still have a parts warranty Gateway should replace
it...well maybe. I personally have never had trouble with Gateway honoring
a parts warranty, but others have horror stories so pray :) Buying your own
modem shouldn't void the computers' whole warranty.
