Modems

I've just recently built up my computer from scratch - and I've still got my 56k pace isa modem from about 4 years ago. I'd like to get a new pci one now.
Can someone tell me whether software modems or hardware modems are better and why?
And is it worth spending extra for a branded modem eg 3com rather than a cheap one like hiacom as there's quite a price difference?

Thanks in advance.

Don't really know exactly how or why! But,
with a a pretty wide variaty of modems I'm gettin the best real thruput with a $39 Creative 56K modem Blaster...
It auto detects in Win 2000 as HSF modem and uses drivers fom the Win CD. Think it is a software modem - but whips every thing else I've got including the 3COM. Connects at like 48.2 and actually transfer/downloads that that too!

Hardware modems are better - they take the stress off your CPU.

It really depends what type of net user you are. Is it worth the price difference to get that better modem? Well, if you're an avid net user and just can't wait for slower downloads, go for it. Broadband may also suit you. If you're just a casual user, go for a cheaper brand.
