Apple's touch implementation is really top notch on all of their devices.
I bought my HTC T8282 right after playing with an iphone because HTC's implementation is also very good. I prefered freedom on my device. I use my phone as my tethered modem all the time, incurring no additional charges than my basic AT&T $20/mo data plan.
I agree with you about not expecting much for a refined experience on this ASUS device. I've yet to find any touch phone that is as responsive as Apple or HTC's implementations, which they have constantly refined over several generations.
