I had a non-flying character in a Champions
game I was running take the hard way down from
Earth orbit some years ago. He was an ultra-tech
robot, with full life support and about 30 points
each of fully resistant physical and energy
defense, not to mention some extra Body points.
He was probably the only character I've ever
had in one of my campaigns who I think could
have survived this...his quote, as he watched
the Earth get closer, "This is gonna hurt!"

I don't recall how many dice I threw at him - I
think it was 30d6 of normal physical for the
terminal velocity impact at the end, plus some
multiple number of 8d6 energy killing attacks
(fire) for the re-entry heat. A fisherman
pulled a very charred but still functional
robot out of the Sea of Japan at the beginning
of the next play session.

My question for the group: is there an
"official" ruling for how much damage re-entry
should do to a character? Perhaps in one
of the Hero sci-fi supplements?

According to Star Hero, atmospheric re-entry does a flat 5 BODY per Phase.

"Flat" as in, "no matter what defenses are available"?
And did they give a rule of thumb on how many phases
it would take?

Obviously not, given that ships manage to achieve re-entry.

In game, they have have lots of BODY.
In real life, they require extensive repair afterwords.

In some sci-fi, neither would be so...

As can the average UNTIL agent, at least until the
sudden stop. ;-)

Yes, but I like your ruling better. BTW how many 8d6 EKA's did you hit him
with?

"Flat" as in "the same amount every Phase without rolling dice".
If you assume an altitude of 125km for the atmosphere to be dense
enought to generate significant friction.
(A Google search produced at least a dozen different numbers for
atmosphere thickness).
Falling that distance would take 2086 Segments or 34 3/4 minutes.

I think it was 8, each applied seperately against his
defenses, with no opportunity for recoveries until he
was resting comfortably on the ocean floor. I hadn't
expected it to come up, so I had to improvise a
rule for the experience on the spot.

Re-entry only counts at ORBITAL velocities, not simple falling. If
you're just released to fall you won't GET that kind of speed unless
you start falling a LONG way out of atmosphere. Atmospheric re-entry
will take a few SECONDS -- maybe up to a minute if you have a really,
really flat entry angle -- before you lose enough speed to stop
burning up.

Oh, come on! You can survive atmospheric re-entry with a mere five points of
resistive ED?

I just re-checked and 5 BODY is the damage inflicted on a ship making a
controlled reentry. There doesn't seem to be an information on an
uncontrolled plummet.
