I've been thinking the same thing.

I wouldn't be suprised if that is why the core is now up to 700 MHZ. They are going to crank their platinum edition just high enough to beat out the 7800GTX. New design, 700MHz core, extra vertex, equal or better memory, and a 16 pipe card could outperform the 7800GTX I'd think. Problem is does NV have an Ultra waiting for just such a situation that would put them back on top. Yeah, 24 pipes would be nice though.

Anyway, I fear R520 will not nearly equal the hype/rumors from the past months and the 7800GTX is about as much excitement as we will get this year. Not that 7800GTX is bad, I just want newer and better more often.

Umm... remember the 7800ultra will be clocked in the neighbourhood of 700mhz, and that's on 110nm. Now imagine Nvidia moving to 90nm, but i'm sure it'll be an unsmooth transition like ATI. Then again there are exceptions, Whe Intel moved from 130nm to 90nm, that was horrendous, however AMD made the move quitely, and was very successful.

I seriously doubt the ultra will be clocked near 700mhz just from adding dual slot cooling.

As for the R520 I read that it was always going to be 16 pipe card from day 1 so perhaps R580 has 24 or 32 pipes. It'll be very interesting to see how it all plays out and hows its all remembered.

Intels dothans clocks higher and uses less power then banias, another overlooked exception.

It is a tweaked core, and people have reported 600mhz(560+40 In fact i think vapor got there on a bfg card) on the GTX with stockcooling... XFX's 7800GTX is clocked at 530(490+40) by default, so I wouldn't doubt if the 7800ultra with a voltage bump could hit 700mhz. Have you seen the heatsink? it's gigantic, and uses 80mm fan.

I havent seen it yet, link? but 80mm fans sounds impressive. Can all of them get to those sort of clocks? I read at beyond3d dave couldnt get his past 500 on stock cooling so yeah yields should be interesting. And only parts of the core (vertex shaders i believe) get the 40mhz overclock. Hmm perhaps with the ultra it could get a higher overclock with that?

EVGA is at 450 out of the box. Stock cooling 500 is pushing it. My highest scores by far were with a high memory clock and a moderate GPU clock.

Wow! 700mhz might not be that far off then.

You know, i hopelessly hope for ATI at the last moment to pull a 24 pipe card out of their ass, that would force Nvidia to release the 7800ultra, pushing down prices of the 7800gtx, and the cut down version of the ATI top chip would be affordable.

We certainly do need that happen or something to happen because competition is good thing (TM)

They should try and get their mid range cards out at least then they could earn back some credibility.

I tell you somthing funny, a lot of people are hoping that the r520 is going to be released anytime soon and it will magically crush nvidia.

and magically nvidia will have nothing to retalliate with up there sleeves.

Pull the other dream out the bag!

I was really hoping the r520 was going to be released in august but now my hopes in ati are fading fast i hope this news is not true.

Fair competition is great, driving prices down, I just hope the Canadian government doesn't start subsidizing ATI, that just ruins companies. The Canadian's government's subsidies has destroyed every Canadian industry, the last case of this happened a few months ago when the "merger" between Coors and Molson took place, it wasn't a merger, it was a takeover by Coors, since they have all the senior officials positions, including Chief Executive.

Holy crap!! 600 on stock cooling with the GTX are you sure about that scottchen? Damn that's freakin awesome I guess Nvidia probably does have a good card to counter the 520 then. Sheesh, I like Nvidia but as we all know and have stated we need competition.
