Question Motherboard compatibility with Gpu

Hello, I have a very old thinkcentre m80 motherboard with a gen1 i7 870. Its working with an GTX460, but when i tried upgrade to an r9 280x i got a black screen. I was wondering if there is a way to know which gpu i can upgrade to. Im not in a position to buy a new setup. I was wondering will r9 270 work?

I believe the R9 280X requires direct power from the PSU via 1 x 6-pin cable plus 1 x 8-pin cable.

Have you connected these?

Yes, It doesnt seem to be a power issue, I have a 500 w power supply witch would be enough to get a picture atleast. The card was tested afterwards and works fine on a different config. The issue is motherboard compatibility i think, but i dont know what to do or which card to get
