I'm looking to put together a new system, and while I'm pretty good with picking memory, storage, sound/video etc. I need some help with mobo/cpu.

The system needs the speed and stability (it'll be on 24/7) and I use it for stock trading so apps need to load/work fast.

Here's what i will add to the sysem:

2x 1GB DDR
2x 250GB SATA 16MB Cache HD
256MB Video (still deciding which one)
XP Pro

So I need sata on that mb, and I want to go with Pentium 4 3.0 or 3.2GHz ONLY, so P4 mobo.

Thanks for the help guys.

PS. I'm in Canada so whatever's available here I can get.

I'm looking at one of these two:

Intel Pentium 4 630, 3.0 GHz, 2MB L2, 800 MHz FSB, Socket LGA775, HT Technology

OR

Intel Pentium 4 640, 3.2 GHz, 2MB L2, 800 MHz FSB, Socket LGA775, HT Technology

everybody in this forum says that Intel CPU sucks, since you're planning your new system to run run 24/7 I would suggest for an Athlon64's since they have a cool n' quiet feature they sure will not get overheat.

Here's my issue, I only had intel up til now. I look at athlon and read some reviews comparing p4 3.2 and athlon 3200+, they all said that 3200+ worked at something that's close to p4 2.8

so what athlon would you recommend? is 3200 really that "slow" or you just can't compare apples and oranges (or apples and apples in this 'name' case)?

All else being equal, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 2.8 and 3.2GHz in most situations, no matter which CPUs you were using. That said, the Athlon64 would likely outperform the P4 in most tasks other than perhaps some multimedia functions, like video editing.

depending on your budget an athlon64 3200+ socket 939 venice core will do the job well. a 3200+ can definitely work exactly as a P43.2Ghz in games & other multimedias and can even beat the P4 but in some benchmarks such as MP3 encoding, Video rendering a P43.2Ghz is just a bit faster.

In real time you will not noticed the differences in the performance of those chips but on benchmarks the 3500+ is just a little faster. I definitely recommend the 3200+ since it's overclockable and you can even OC it to a near 4000+.

Fair enough, why spend extra money if I dont need to.

What motherboard would you recommend for this cpu?

Everything else looks fine..sata..pci-e video..perfect.

HTT works only with XP, right?

Yes multitasking is important to me. I mostly use computer for stocks (trading) so I usualy have many apps/windows open (charts, filters etc.) so p4 might work better?

so what mobo for p4 would you guys recommend?

First I wanted only P4, then started thinking about AMD..and now I'm lost in the middle:)

Seriously, I'm not sure what to go with not..multi tasking is very important to me, games are not, stability is, speed for aps is..

For motherboard I'll spend up to $150-160 (CDN), for cpu up to $300-350

Those are two things I really need help with. I THINK that I might be better of with a p4 system..but then again :?

Thanks for all the help and those links for AMD motherboards..anyone want to recommend some p4 lga775 motherboards?

The P4 with Hyper Threading is faster for multitasking unless you get an AMD X2. However, for the tasks you will be using, there will not be a notciable difference, so go with whichever is cheaper (prolly AMD).

Yeah no games for me at all:)

The only "game" I play once in a while (= once a month) is solitaire and minesweeper:)

So for what I need it P4 3.0 or 3.2 is good..of course I'll need to (finaly) let go W2K and go to XP so HT works..but I guess that won't be an issue.

The question is what motherboard for this p4?
If anyone has time, anything from this web site you'd recommend (since they have a store near me) http://www.canadacomputers.com/

As for video, I'll just get something for under $100 since there's no real need for speed there.

My point is, since he's planning his new system to be on 24/7 and he wants it to be stable the right choice would be an Athlon64 because of the cool n' quiet feature.

It's basically just a matter of personal preferences if you think hyperthreading is important then go with the P4, If you want your PC to be stable and cool around the clock then go w/ the A64.

Right now this computer (2.4 celeron..old) has been on for about 8 months, 24/7, and I had no issues. Then again I don't instal new stuff often or do anything else that would either require a restart or make the system unstable.

So maybe I should just stick with intel and go with a P4..for now at least.

If I only knew what motherboard to go with.. :)

Here are some "Tier 1" mobo options available near you:

Asus P5LD2-VM 945G: Integrated graphics so you can add high-power video card in the future.

Intel D945GTPLR: Integrated graphics so you can add high-power video card in the future.

Asus P5WD2 (955X): More features and $. Better board but no Video.

Intel, Asus and Tyan market rock-solid, stable boards. If heat issues concern you:

1) Please note that Intel procs will downclock automatically if threatened by overheating.

2) This forum as well as Guru review sites like Tom's. Anandtech,
exteremeoverclocking.com, SilentPC Review, et al.. can give good advice on cooling issues/products.

Then again I don't instal new stuff often or do anything else that would either require a restart or make the system unstable.

Sounds like you don't OC, or make Windows mad. Most any PC with a decent power supply will be stable under these conditions.

Is having many windows open is really multitasking? Some sort of. but I guess that your computer is connected to internet and waiting for data to get in..

Any recent CPU will give you good performance. I've used both brand and both are good. You can get crappy system with both. You can have stable system for both.

So you need something always on? Ok..

What's make stability is not the CPU.. It's the overall system. Good PSU is a step to not overlook. probably respnsible for 80% of all computer stability problem I've seen. If not more..because I think that some motherboard I seen (for Intel and AMD) that suffer from bad capacitor would have last longer with quality PSU supplying stable power.

So get a good PSU with at least 420w. Avoid generic one that come with case. Fortron is often mentionned here. I have succes with Thermaltake PSU that powered anything I've thrown at it for 3 years without hiccup...

Then the case. Yes. While cheap case can do, if your computer is going to be on always, pay a bit more to get something with good vetilation and some are available with case filter, to prevent dust to get in. remember..the underpowered celeron you have will be more tolerant to less powerful PSU and dirty heat sink. Newer P4 will probably start to throttle down if the heat sink get dirty because they get hotter than older one. Newer Prescott P4 can idle at 45-50 degrees.. Imagine at full load..

Now, get either an AMD X2 3800+ or Intel 820D. The AMD will cost more but wil give you more computing power, less noise and les heat. But the 820D will be sufficient. the 830 D would be a closer match for the 3800+.

In my experience, Gigabyte has some solid motherboard.

It seems that the hardest thing that this forum to agree about is what needs to go into the basic computer for the base user.
EDIT: These f**ing adds that pop onto any word that Tom's database knows are f**ing annoying me!!!!!
