I used to work with a guy who told people he was building a P-51 Mustang in his garage. Guys would say "Oh, really..." and walk away. You just considered the source.
The whole competition on benchmarks thing is a bit screwed.
Anyway, I think the real fun of tweaking and benchmarking is making the most of the hardware you have. (I'm not talking about the size of one's weiner.) That's why sports have different classes. Take boxing for example - heavyweights don't go up against featherweights. I use 3DMark to see how much I can get out of my hardware, then compare my scores to others with comparable hardware. Then I want to see what I can do to improve my numbers, without replacing components.
There is, of course, the quest for the best numbers, but that requires a different approach. It means that beyond tweaking your system, you also look for the fastest/most efficient components. (So my F-16 flies faster and farther than the P-51 in that guy's garage.)
As far a FUGGER is concerned, he can talk all he wants. Unless he posts some results, he's only talkin'. If someone calling him a liar isn't enough to get him to post his numbers, then I'd assume he is lying. In a way, I feel sorry people who act this way. They're immature and insecure. Too bad.
Calling attention to outrageous claims might be fun, but it also serves a purpose. If that stuff went unchallenged, you'd have people who didn't know any better thinking that their systems were dogs 'cause they didn't get the numbers someone else is claiming in a discussion group.
