My ASUS laptop shuts off randomly

I just got my computer about 10 months ago and about 2 months ago it shut off randomly. I didn't get it looked at because it said it was doing updates so I thought that was why. Now it shuts off all the time. I've had it looked at by geek squad and the said it seemed fine to them but then just today it shut off again after I had it on for about 10 minutes. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

My step-daughter's ASUS102b had a similar shut down problem that was linked to movement of the lid / screen. Disassembling found the two screws (black screws, one on each hinge) that held the hinges in place were loose. When the lid was moved it caused the motherboard to flex also. Tightening the screws solved the issues completely. A little threadlock glue would be good to ensure they stay in place

I think I have a clue. After a couple of those sudden shutdowns, I did my work always plugged in for almost a week, instead of on battery. Normally I work on battery until it's fairly low, then plug in and work while charging. Today, after the week of not running the battery down, I've worked for several hours now on battery without a problem. My guess is that there may be an issue with the charge level detection, and that working fully charged to the top perhaps resets it properly. Or it's possible the indicator is showing higher than the charge level and the computer is shutting down because it's actually too low. Don't know which, but this is a big clue. My computer is running nice and cool, always on a podium cooling pad.

I had this same problem with my Asus and I updated the bios (with Winflash) and now it seems to be working fine.

My Asus Zen was shutting down 'randomly', and I noticed that this was happening whenever I placed it on a leather case, which has a magnetic closing mechanism - I presume the cause of the shut down is the magnets when in close proximity to my laptop.

My Asus laptop shuts down under the slightest GPU load but if i tell it to run on the intel instead of the onboard Nvidia chip it still runs.

I always thought asus were good but clearly i was mistaken as a lot of people seem to be having shutdown issues

Has anybody been doing work on the computer? As in using Word and or Powerpoint, and has had their ASUS shut off, was your work still there once the computer rebooted? Because im a student and i use my laptop to write papers, i can't be doing work for three hours and just lose everything ive been working on. Has anybody encountered this situation and could tell me if the work is save or not, thanks!

10 minutes ago my latop shut off and I lost 5 minutes worth of writing.. so I changed my autosave in word from 10 minutes to 1 minute:
Word > File > Options > Save > 1 min
Still cant figure out the solution to ASUS laptop randomly shutting off....
I just bought this laptop on December 26th 2016 and I had this issue since mid January 2017. I bought this with the Geek squad at Best Buy and wanted to get this laptop replaced entirely, but they didn't have the same kind in stock so they sent it to the manufacturing to get it "fixed". Two weeks later it was brought back with no issues found. One week later other issues occurred on top of the shutting off such as the wifi networks not showing up as options and when video editing, graphics card wouldn't be able to handle the GRAPHICS -.-
SO it was sent back to the manufacture and the two things were updated.
Now we are in March 2017 and I AM STILL having the "shutting off issues".
Can someone PLEASE help me.

The same my Asus A55VD. It is NOT a heat problem. NOT a software problem. NOT a battery problem. It is a PITFALL of Asus. We MUST to make everybody to know it and reclaim a Asus a solution all together.

I had the same problem but found that it was because the screen was not at a wide enough angle. With touchscreen it was just a little too close and it would "bounce" back. Moved the screen further back and that solved the problem

- Unplug
- Hold power button for 40 sec.
- Plug and turn on

I didnt read all of the answers here but I manage to save my GL552VW from not turning on at all.

All I did was calling ASUS Belgium and he told me to remove the battery and unplug the laptop. Then click and hold the power button for 30 seconds twice, plug everything back and turn on (just like some users suggested or close enough).

He said that will release the electricity held in the battery and uninstall all windows updates.

Now its back to normal and no problems, love it. I hope this helps

I believe this is a bug with the program or the fault of the on off switch, because if you press the on switch and hold, the shutdown is exactly the same. Sometimes I got same sudden shutdown when pressing the key or inserting a pendrive.

My laptop is a brand new ASUS on window 10 but the random shutdown is always when I am on battery.

sometimes it shutdown when the battery is 50 percent or even when its 90% thats why i call it random. It also shutdown when the body is still cold...

I always put all my laptop on cooling pads which is powered separately through a usb power jack connected to powerpoint so sparing use of laptop usb.

hence the only two things wrong are

1. either the battery connection is bad or
2. just bloody malware detecting i am on battery and start this on off thing.

anyone can help me further, I will appreciate

Well I was also having the same problem but I got this problem resolved quite easily. You guys can also try it and hopefully it will work. Just follow these steps and you will get rid of this problem.
1. First Go To Device Manager of your computer.
2. Go to System Devices.
3. There You will find Intel Management Engine Interface just right click on it and uninstall it.
4. Go To https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26136/Intel-Management-Engine-Driver-5M-for-Windows-7-8-1-and-Windows-10-for-Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5i5MYHE , and download this driver (around 150 MB or it might get changed in future).
5. As the file you have downloaded is zip file so you have to extract it. Just right click on it and select Extract here.
6. Then you get 3 folders, go to Driver Packages folder and then go to MEI folder.
7. Now you will find a file named heci.inf just right click on it and select install.
That's it your laptop is Perfect now.

Power button Solution

I just finshed repairing a Asus S550C laptop and yes the power loss fault was due to a power button issue.
The power button is located on a tiny circuit board (PCB) that is isolated from the main system board.
Asus uses a metal woven ribbon to ground the board to the chassis and the system board. Oh dear....

The problem is due to a floating ground caused by the ribbon cable loosing ground connection (floating ground).

If others are having similar issues (random power loss) as in this forum chances are it is due to this ribbon cable.

Disassemble the laptop and check to see if there is a ribbon connecting the power button PCB to the laptop chassis. If there is, clean the ribbon cable and power button. Lubricate the topside button (the user presses to power on the laptop) to make sure that it is not sticky. Make sure that the ribbon has good contact on the screw mounting hole and to the the chassis (there is a holding bracket on the bottom cover that holds the ribbon cable in place).

Re-install the bottom cover but before screwing it back down, power up the laptop to make sure it is working properly.

Okay, my Eee is running fine again. I am sure in my case it was a contact problem in the power button. Cleaning and pressing it again and again while measuring the continuity went right. 🙂
