My Book Essential Fell on Side

My WD My Book Essential fell on its side. My PC doesn't recognize it as a drive any more but it does allow me to safely remove it and it does know that it's a My Book. How do I access the over 1GB of data on it?

Try a data recovery program like Recuva or Easeus, if the data is still there one of those should be able to recover it.

If you can, remove the hard drive from the case and attach it directly to the motherboard to rule out damage to the case electronics. But HDDs really don't like falling. Well, they don't mind falling, it's the sudden stop at the end that breaks them. Worse if the drive was spinning at the time.
