Well, this is from my other thread. My current PSU is a POS, so I am going to buy a new one.

My PC specs will be:
BFG Geforce 7900 gt
DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D (s939)mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3000+(soon to o/c or replace with 3800 X2)
1 gb PC3200 ram(2X512 mb sticks)
2X120gb Western Digital HD's

and I think thats all I need to mention.

Anyway, what are some good PSU's I could put into this? I would like to have 500 Watts or above. I want to spend roughly 100$ CAD. Someone said Antec are good, but what are some others?

The best is the one that doesn't blow up and take your computer out with it. But, I don't think there is actually any data to prove one as the best, though there are good power supplies. Also, there is a price limit set, so the better question might be: What is a good 500W power supply in the $100 CAD price range. Phreejak gave you a selection. Pick one.

And, what other thread are your refereing to? Why not use that thread, or at least link to it if it might hold some information that could be helpful?

He mentioned a budget of around $100 CAD

Those suggestions won't do him much good.

PC P & C would cost him twice what his budget is for a PSU and there are several just as reputable PSUs like Seasonic, Silverstone and FSP for considerably less. Tagans 480 doesn't have PFC and Seventeam's site doesn't show any online etailer in north america.

Here are some reviews of midrange and highend PSUs that should help you

Also, what is the difference between dual and triple rails? I'm obviously not going sli with my mobo, and I am very sure I won't mod it.
And...if the psu is sli ready, will it fit in a non sli system?

you don't even need to spend that much on a power supply if you are JUST sticking onto that rig x939

So if you just wanna spend a little but a very RELIABLE Fortron PSU,
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=17076&vpn=ATX-400-PN-B&manufacture=Fortron%20Source
$43cad
The reviews speak for itself.

or if you want to go a little bit more in quality,

either the modular OCZ psu like
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13609&vpn=OCZ52012U&manufacture=OCZ%20Technology
for $95cad

or a Seasonic 500w Sli Ready
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14427&vpn=S12-500HT-F3BLR&manufacture=Seasonic%20Electronics
for $120cad

either way, you'll be fine for that rig.

I like Cooler Master. I have a 450 watt one with active PFC and dual 12 volt rails. It also has 18 amps and 16 amps on those rails, but it's not the SLI model. That's the 550 watt power supply. The one thing I don't use is the meter that can be installed in a diskette drive bay.

This is the one I have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171001

It's powering a P4 Northwood 2.8, D865PERL mobo, 2 gig Corsair VS512 x4, 1 WD 160 SATA, 1 Maxtor 100 SATA, one Maxtor 300 IDE, one Combo drive, 1 16x DVD R+/RW, and an All in Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro.

I think that's close to your price range.

The 550 watt model:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171009

The 550's 3rd 12 volt rail is for SATA drives, I believe. It's a bit more than your $100 Can, but it's a good deal for future proofing.

Anyways, the old school way of telling if a power supply is good is by weight. Nowadays, I don't get a case with a power supply. You get what you pay for and something around 34 or more amps on a single 12 volt rail, or divided up among 2 or 3 is the way to go. Those PSUs cost anywhere from $79 to $119 or so.

I'll go with Cooler Master, Antec or ASUS for my next build and get one that's Crossfire compatible, just in case I decide to splurge down the line.

Also, what is the difference between dual and triple rails?

The short answer is nothing, as long as it has the current to supply your components. This thread has a similar discussion and about half way down we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of multiple rails.

So that means I could get a SLi PSU and run it with only one vid card, I take it?

I've owned a few caddies and they've all disappointed me. But my Fortron PSU also murdered my stuff after 2 years as well. 🙁

Trying OCZ GameXStream 600W .. we'll see my luck with this one.. i think this is another Fortron correct???

Pengwin, I'm not sure what you are talking about but I was answering this guys question. If you look at the post subject I was replying to JACKS0NESP.

The Seasonic S12 430 is more than enough to power you system even if you add on a couple of WD Raptor HDDs. But if you really want 500w and intend on running SLI then get the Seasonic S12 500.

Very efficient and quiet. Rock solid voltages.
