Hey there!

I was searching for a NAS (prebuild) to get in order to store and back up my files, I thought that creating my own NAS with parts I already have would be a much cheaper option.
My build for the NAS (I already have these parts) is going to be

CPU = I54460
RAM= 4gb ddr3 (2x2gb)
MO = Z97P-D3
PSU = Be Quiet 500w Power 9 Bronze

And the parts I need to buy

2x4TB WD red HDD = Mirrored
1x Kingston A400 120GB SSD (for software) or just a HDD depends on what I already have
And a PCI-E ethernet (1gbps -since the internet speed is 100mb/s) since the mo ethernet is acting weird.

The software I am planning to use is UNRAID

Questions:
1)
Is it a good build for storing and accessing files? or should I get a NAS unit like Synology DiskStation DS220+
2) Also, should I get anything else too in order to connect it to the router etc?

P.S. is going to be my first NAS build 😉

Solution
Your i5 would be more powerful then most NAS's . I use an even older processor myself. LoL

You'll probably need more Ram eventually (definitely if you add more drives later)

You don't need an SSD, Unraid can be put on a flash drive.

Get an intel chip Nic. I have excellent results with a Pro 1000. Broadcom also is typically highly recommended.
