Need a quiet, cheap cpu cooler for my e8400

the most important thing is cost and noise. it doesn't have to be the best cooler, as i won't be overclocking, but i need it to be quiet and cheap. any good suggestions?

Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme, cost about $45-$60. You will need to get a fan, as it doesn't come with one. Just get a 120mm like this:

I am using a Xigmatek 1283, its very quiet with the included fan and has excelent cooling, I picked mine up for 40, not sure if that is out of your budget, it is also a large cooler, make sure you have the space.

I should add that's it's worthwhile to actually listen to the HSFs that's a feature at Frostytech. Some of them may be lower in decibels, but they have a high pitched keening sound that can really be irritating (at least for me)

Xigmatek S963 (extremely cheap and high performance, best bang/buck)
Xigmatek S1283 (cheap and top-end performance)
Scythe Ninja (very quiet, even at full speed)

Yes, it will fit, but it is more expensive than units that perform much better (read: Xigmatek)

as i said, there are some issues regarding what's available and what's not. xigmatek isn't. i'm ordering the cpu cooler from the same place i'm ordering the rest of my pc components. that limits the field slightly. besides, i can just set the typhoon to 6-700 rpm and it'll be silent as f***, no?

based on those HSs that are available I would go for the Akasa AK-965

It performs almost identically to the S963 ( http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2137&page=4 ) and is much cheaper than the Typhoon (which is quite dated).

I would say the Thermaltake comes in second (without knowing the currency conversion), although the AK-965 probably outperforms it for less $$$. Avoid Zalman like the plague, they're overpriced and outdated.

Edit: here's the current FT chart, and the Akasa seems to be holding its own, even against newer designs.

The CNPS9500 works well and is quiet, I have one on an X2 4400 system and it does a good job.

Id say go to the Akasa like KyleSTL said, or the Zalman 9500 eventhough its overpriced. The Akasa isnt on your list but it is at the store you are shopping at.

looking at these results, which cooler is actually less noisy if i restriced the rpm of the typhoon? in the test, they run at 1300rpm or more. if i lowered it to 6-900rpm, wouldn't it be far less noisy?

Remember the smaller the fan the more noise it will make. The 120mm fan on the Coolermaster will produce less noise than the 80mm on the VX. I say go with the coolermaster.

It always depends on what you call cheap but anyways I own both the Thermalright Ultima and the Xigmatek s1283, they are both relatively quite with performances to booth. The Xigmatek is cheaper and comes with a fan which is not the game with the TRU.

That's based on SPCR standards. They tear up the Zalmans because they're much louder (in comparison).

if i'm reading this correctly, the big typhoon does very well in terms of noise. only worry, is it too big and heavy for the m-board and cpu?

No youll be fine. With the exception of that Akasa, these things would not be sold if they were so heavy/horribly made that they damage motherboards.
