Hi,

I'm planning to build a new PC, and I really want to know if i'm not going overboard with some components since I'm mostly looking for a 1080p/60 FPS gaming (144Hz on light esports games), I would really like some advice.

So here's the potential build :

CPU: Intel i5-9400F
MOBO: MSI B360M PRO VH or VD
RAM: CORSAIR VENGEANCE 2400Mhz or CRUCIAL BALLISTIX 2666Mhz 2x8GB
GPU: Nvidia 2070
Case: Looking for a dust resistant one, water cooling not necessary.

I still have my old Corsair 850RM Gold, I wonder if it's still ok for this build.

For the GPU, I don't know which 2070 is best for me, and whether the 2070 itself is overkill price wise for a 1080p/60FPS, unless it's future proof.

Please don't hesitate to post any modified build based on this one if you see it more fitting than mine and I'll see if those are available in my country.

Thank you.

I think a better combination for 1080p gaming that is cheaper would be a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX 1660ti.

Cheaper is good, but is it like at least future proof for the next 2-3 years, I'm looking at games like Cyberpunk 2077, which my perhaps struggle on this 1660Ti.
Maybe a 2060 is a better in between ?

Why not slap in a i5 8600k and 2060? Could make a build via pcpicker for ya.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the 8600K is nearly double the price of the 9400F (yeah, they keep the MSRP even when a new gen is available), and I don't think I will actually fully use the K since I never overclock.
I don't mind either Intel or AMD as long as it doesn't have any bottleneck down the line (like the 2600 for example, which is cheaper than 9400F).

Then 2600x should do the job with the 2060.

Thanks, any advice for a good mobo for that, I don't really need a big one, just enough to plug two HDDs and maybe one SSD.
Prefer a sturdy one, as my last Gigabyte mobo had a real issue with x16 PCI that losses contact from the graphic card after a while (must be weighing a lot).

B450 motherboards should be fine

$1,600 is a total overkill budget for 1080p gaming in 2019 lol. 9400F seems like a great choice of CPU. Everything seems pretty good, My advice would be to save money on GPU and get a new power supply, For less than $75 you can get a brand new power supply and the peace of mind that comes along with that. A 2060 should be perfectly fine for your goals.
Just to give you an idea. I have a system with an i5-4690k and an older 970 GPU and get 60 fps in new games and 144 fps in League and Counter strike. Just about any build you put together in 2019, literally any working configuration that you can come up with (that has a GPU) will get you 60fps in just about all games 1080p and 144 in esports.
So if you still want to spend that much, might I suggest changing your monitor and aiming for 1440p gaming instead? or Lowering your budget and saving the money. Pauls Hardware (youtube channel) has lots of great 1080p gaming builds and many of them aren't expensive at all.

I mean I don't mind staying at 1080p, but I do downsample many games as I prefer that to most available AA.
I have a 4770K and a 290 OC, and I wanted to actually have a big upgrade that may be future proof.
That is why I thought that 2070 at least is the go to, but now I see that the 2060 is no slouch either (espeically that it's a 200$ diffirence between the two).

Hmmm, well here's what I think: Your 4770k is NOT obsolete yet. It's not future proof, but it is still a good CPU right now. If you want something NOTICEABLY BETTER, and future proof, then I wouldn't go with the 9400f, I'd say its marginally better and your overclock would probably offset that, going with the 9400f would probably only net you 10% improvement CPU wise. Intel doesn't have a lot that is vastly better than 4770k right now, you can go up to the 9700k or 9900k for future proofing or wait til later this year to see what they come up with or wait til summer for Ryzen 3 release.

Another tricky part is "future proof" and "1080p build" aren't in the same category right now. Any "future proof" build will probably be overkill for 1080p.

Here is a good idea since you have the budget: get a RTX 2080ti and stick it in your system as is. Yes, you may be bottle necking it slightly in some scenarios but you should see a tenfold increase in performance over your 290. The GPU will be future proof for as long as a GPU can possibly be future proof for, and when your CPU eventually becomes obsolete, you can just plug that 2080ti into whatever CPU/mobo config you come up with then. Just an idea..... Plus if you ever decide to move over to 1440p or 4k you will be set. Since you said you can spend up to $1,800, you really could also get a 1440p 144hz monitor to go along with it, and then you might not be bottlenecking at all, especially with RTX (global illumination) enabled.

Have you ever seen "Scrapyard Wars" on Linus Tech Tips channel? If I was on scrapyard wars and had $1,800 to build a system right now, I would definitely go with an RTX 2080ti and 4770k if I could, hands down, 100%. That kicks the crud out of any other system you can possibly think up for that budget, in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm really with you on that, as the CPU is rarely causing issue gaming wise for 1080p.

But as I said, my Mobo is basically failing (x16 PCIE slot) and it's an issue that happens whenever I move my PC (needed for cleaning as it gets really dusty).
So I'm kinda stuck having to change everything if I want to upgrade or just wait until the PC dies for good.

Sorry for weird circumstances, but in my country, the cheapest 2080Ti is at 1700$ while the cheapest 2080 is 1100$.

In comparison, the priciest RX Vega 64 is at close to 1000$.

Man those prices are crazy! It's hard to make a recommendation off the top of my head with those prices. Do you think a GPU support bracket could help your pcie lot? If your mobo is giving you problems then definitely you definitely need a new build as you stated. And RIGHT NOW, the ryzen 5 and 2060 are the way to go based on what you are looking for. The 9400f or even the 9600k wouldn't be bad choices either, I think the single core performance is still higher on intel.

I'll go probably with Intel unless I find a good price for the 2600X, and the 2060.

Thanks a lot for everyone who helped.
