hello people,

i hope someone can help with my question...I have a Dell computer and want to Format my hardrive and install WinXP. I am currently running WINME and am not very fond of it. I know how to Format to clean out my system. My question is what do i do next so i can upload the WINXP OS on my computer....can someone help me with this?....i have never done this so the help will be greatly appreciated.

thankx

just boot from the winXP CD and follow the instructions. You can format it right from the installation procedure, then install.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

ok i have already made the mistake of formatting my harddrive...now i am stuck in DOS PROMPT not being able to do anything because i don't know DOS very well...anyways i did the format...i have my command prompts and i went into the cd-rom drive and told it to run setup.exe but it wouldn't do it and know i am stuck with no where to go?...dose anyone have any suggestions on what i can do next being stuck in DOS?...

Boot your pc and go into the Bios utility if you can (F2,Del etc). You must select in the Boot Sequence Cd, Floppy then HD in that order invert floppy and Cd if you want if you can. This will allow you to boot using the Installation cd for Xp (original copies are bootable). From there follow the prompts on the screen. This should allow you to do a fresh install of the OS on your pc. If you can't get into your Bios go to the Mfg of your computers web site to find out how.

I kind of had the same problem when i went to do a clean install. the computer wouldnt boot off the cd (dont ask u know why). What I ended up doing was installing Windows ME minimum install - no drivers or anything else. Then installed XP with the NTFS convert and overwrite option. Been working just fine. No signs at all of ME. I would also suggest partitioning the drive into at least 2 drives if your HD is big enough. I've seen it suggested to make the OS partition as small as 8 or 10 Gig, and the other partition(s) what u want.
