Hi there, i have just ran Multimon from resplendence software on my
computer. I noticed that the IP address of the loopback 127.0.0.1 was
basically engulfing the network. My question is - Is this normal for an
average network of 40+ computers or is there a problem/malfunction in the
network. The MS Performance monitor detects 100% packets recieved unknown.
If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

The IP Address 127.0.0.1 is the Default Windows IP Address. Some programs
use this IP Address to send Data back to the PC from the PC. (Loopback)
Basically, if you were to disconnect the PC from the net and network, this
would be Windows' IP Address. Note, this IP address can be forged, however,
but as long as all the PC's are doing the same thing and you haven't had any
network attack, you are OK.

Hope it helps,

Thanks for the info, does this mean it will be searching for connections all
the time when connected to a network, i know media sense actually checks for
a connection does the loopback do a similar thing. I am trying to find out
why there are so many packets showing up in Multimon and why there are so
many unknown packets picked up by the performance monitor. However, i
unplugged my workstation from the network and performance monitor still
registered 100% unknown packets. Is it normal for this to occur?

Yea - Everything is normal, from what I can tell. Some programs need to
communicate with themselves, and they sometimes do it in this method. If you
disconnected from the network and It does this, everything is fine, it's
probably something the program does by default.
