OK I just tried a new ati radeon 5830 on my new gaming rig
AMD Phenom 2*6 1090t
6gb ddr3 ram
600w psu
but in most games it is not performing much better than my other rig in which i have a msi gtx 260 1792mb single card
in fact in far cry 2 benchmarking even when overclocked it cant keep up with the stock gtx 260.in crysis warhead the average frame rate is better but the minimum frame rate is horrible.
Crysis warhead
ati 5830
Min:15
MAX:45
AVG:32

GTX 260
MIN:20
MAX:37
AVG:29

but bcoz of the low minimum framerate the game was much more enjoyable on the gtx 260 than the 5830.is the 5830 really more powerful than the gtx 260 as ppl say?coz it isnt providing much increases in performance against the gtx 260.in all games i tried the averages of 5830 are higher but the minimums are lower than the 260 so the games are not much enjoyable?is something wrong with my rig?

my other rig
Intel core i7 870
6GB DDR3 RAM
650W PSU
MSI GTX 260 CORE 216 SUPERCLOCKED 1792MB SINGLE CARD LIGHNING EDITION

What resolution are you gaming at? If your gaming resolution is high, i think the extra memory is coming into the picture and since the GTX260 is the superclocked edition you are getting better min frame rates. Ideally the HD5830 is somewhat around the HD4890 mark. So it should be more capable than a normal GTX260.

Also, which drivers are you on the Catalyst?

Catalyst 10.8 are the newest drivers!!!
Also, you nave an i7 in the other rig, which pulls out a little better fps in most of the games.

Oh, now i see that the GTX260 is a superclocked version. There's your answer. Plus that, as i said, the i7 tends to pull out little better fps in games than the PII X6. The HD 5830 = HD 4890, stock GTX260 = HD 4870.

Gaming at higher resolutions makes the 1792 MB of memory really come alive. Plus the superclocked edition really churns out more than the HD4890. So, you have the answer.

But try once with the 10.8 and see if there's any improvements.

When you put more into your picture your frame rates will drop....your 260 has what... 216 stream processors, so try this... turn down the quality settings on your 5830 and your frame rates will go up. The old agp had a software texture swap called a gart that helped a lot with quality and speed... I'm only guessing here but doesn't the stream processors do a very similar function as a hardware solution? The 5830 has 1120 stream processors about 5 times what a 260 has... that's a lot of asset dedicated to quality so maybe if you just tone down the quality on the card you should raise the frame rates... I have my 5830 clocked at 850/1050 and I get around 20 to 25 fps on the low end and 40s to 50s on the high end with crysis. I put my game graphics settings on all medium and point my driver software at application settings. It just seems to me that if you have a need for speed and game play then get an Nvidia card.... if your into graphics quality get a Ati card and remember there is always plenty of adjustments that can put you near the middle.

ATi uses superscalar architechture, each shader is counted as a 5-way shader, and can do 5 operations in a cycle. If this isn't optimized (if this operation fails) then the GPU loses it's theorethic effectivenes. Nvidia's architechture is scalar and is 100% effective.

HD 4870= 800 shaders, 800/5 = 160 shaders.
