Hello all !

It time to upgrade my existing desktop. The prior build is about 6 years old and showing its age.
So here is what I picked out for the upgrade. The computer would be used for gaming and some work -_-
My gaming is mainly at 1080. I am not sure my Asus 34” curved monitor would support 4k.

Please look at the build and give me your suggestions. Thank you in advance.

-Not sure if the Corsair H100i V2 CPU cooler can be used on the new build, so I did pick out a new cooler.
-I have had good luck with Asus, Corsair, Gskill, but open to your input.

My budget is around $2500 USA.

Why Me or whoever....

With the holidays things got too busy to order the PC upgrade parts.

With the release of new hardware options for 2023.......would any of the above upgrade suggestions change ?

Again looking at a budget of around $2,500 USD. Prefer Newegg, but okay with Amazon.

Would like to keep unless told otherwise:
  1. ASUS Republic of Gamers Swift PG348Q 34" 21:9 Curved Ultra-Wide G-Sync IPS Monitor
  2. • In-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology
    • HDMI + DisplayPort Inputs
    • 3440 x 1440 Resolution
    • 1000:1 Static Contrast Ratio
  3. Lian Li Full Tower Case
  4. Sound Blaster AE-5 Plus Sound Card
  5. Corsair HX Series, HX1000, 1000 Watt, Fully Modular Power Supply, 80+ Platinum Certified,

Again, thanks in advance for your input !

The gpu listed down below is way overkill for your resolution but until Nvidia releases the 4060 / 4060 Ti I'm going to post this. btw this gpu was just released today so the reviews on it should start showing up on sites such as this one within the next few days and yes I'm going to catch hell for recommending it for your resolution but you have the budget for it and one day you might size up to 1440P and that's where this gpu is going to tear it up as in RTX 3090 / 3090 Ti FPS. You just may end up with the fastest 1080P gaming rig known to mankind. lol

The B760 / H770 boards just started showing up today and they will continue to show up on sites such as Newegg every few days or so.

If you plan on going with a single M.2 NVMe SSD then look at a B760 board. I'll use this one as an example.

MSI MAG B760 TOMAHAWK WIFI $219.99

If you plan on running dual M.2 NVMe SSD's then look at a H770 board. This one should show up on Newegg any day now. Expect it to run $250.

Kudos to the great info people have provided. It is much appreciated!

1. Why should I go with the H770 or B760 as opposed to the Z790 mobo ?

2. If I am getting a gaming GPU, why would it be important to have the integrated graphics on the CPU, like the Intel Core i7-13700F $379.99 that you listed.

3. RE time frame....I would like to order pretty soon, but I am not on hard deadline, thus can wait a week or two, if there is something on the horizon worth waiting for.

4. SSD/HD: currently have 250 mb SSD for Windows, then 1 TB traditional HD for "data" (games, programs, file folders). With upgrade was thinking of one SSD for Windows then second drive for data......SSD or traditional HD. Recommendations appreciated (think drive #1 windows, drive #2 data).

5. Any comments on DDR5 vs getting DDR4 memory ?

Q1; primarily to save money....rather than spend on features you may not need.

Q2; integrated graphics can be useful if your video card dies or is misbehaving in some way.

Q3; all you can do is pound review sites for info on the most recent CPU and board releases. They will be filtering out over the next few weeks. You decide when you can't wait any longer.

Q4; I'd certainly try to avoid any spinning hard drive. You could use one largish SSD for everything or split it up into maybe 500 GB SSD for Windows and apps and maybe 2 TB SSD for everything else. I use the 2 drive method, but it's not a big deal. You can get 2 TB NVMe SSD for under 150. Boot drive of 500 gb might be 50 to 80 bucks. Samsung/Western Digital/Crucial. No need to get latest/greatest NVMe if your board does not support it. You need to know how many M2 ports your board has and whether they support NVMe or SATA or either.

Q5; Compare price differences for DDR4 versus DDR5. The gap varies week to week but is generally narrowing. Maybe DDR5 5600? You might not be able to tell the difference if you didn't know which you had, but you may want to stay on DDR 4 if in a budget crunch. Personally, I'd go with DDR 5 if budget allows. You might be able to get DDR 5 cheaper direct from manufacturer (Crucial/Corsair) rather than from vendor like Newegg/Amazon. Prices jump around significantly.

Offhand....

Does budget prevent avoiding spinning hard drives entirely?

WD 770 is dramless and PCIe 4.0. Some will be skeptical about dramless, although it seems to be a good performer. Alternatives would be WD SN850 or various Samsungs.

"What am I getting with the newer KF over K except slightly lower $?"

You are getting nothing other than lower cost. You are giving up a fallback video capability. You've decided the fallback video is not worth the 28 dollars difference.

Do you have a specific reason to need a board with 4 or 5 M.2 ports...priced at 310 and 500 respectively?

Hello,

1. I had rough budget of around $2,500 USD. I am currently a bit over. If it is recommended, I could add some $ for SSD on both primary and secondary drive. Currently have a 250 mb SSD for Windows and 1 TB spinning HD for data.
500 mb would probably be plenty for Windows and 2-4 TB plenty for data in my current situation.
-Any specific SSD choices here appreciated.

2. Which CPU has video capability? (The K I think 🤔)

3. See #1. I think 2 M.2 ports would be plenty for my needs.
I have in the past usually gone middle ground for the mobo with respect to cost $.
I do not for my need to go for the $750+ Ferrari boards, but I am blessed enough with my good job, I do not want to cheap it either.

4. Again, the budget was rough. If you see an area in the build where I can get a good benefit by spending a bit more, I am very open to do it (for example changing 4070ti to 4080 ?) Additionally, if I am way overspending on a component, let me know please. 😳
I was trying to incorporate some of the feedback given to me in this thread. ✌

Hello,,

1. I had rough budget of around $2,500 USD. I am currently a bit over. If it Is recommended, could add $ for SSD on both primary and secondary drive. Currently have a 250 mb SSD for Windows and 1 TB transitional HD for data.
500 mb would probably plenty for Windows and 2-4 TB plenty for data.

2. Which CPU has video capability?

3. See #1. I think 2 M.2 ports would be plenty for my needs.

Any CPU with an "F" in model name does NOT have integrated video.

So...13700 and 13700K do; 13700F or 13700KF do NOT.

Storage: you are the world's foremost authority on how much capacity you need. You say 2 to 4 TB, but have chosen an 8 TB spinner.

Not sure why. Backups? Future growth rate of data?

You can get 4 TB SSD like Crucial MX 500 for 270 at new egg. Standard 2.5 inch SATA.

Or Crucial 4 TB M.2 for 250 to 275.

If you in fact need 8 TB, then maybe you are forced by budget to a spinning drive. You would know the answer to that.

You say you need only 2 M.2 ports, but your possible boards support 4 or 5.

Not sure why you have your eye on those specific boards. What is the BEST reason?

Do you have a particular attraction to Asus boards? Or reason to avoid MSI or Gigabyte?

How about this:

13600K, not 13700

Air cooling, not liquid. Noctua, Be Quiet, or ?

4 TB Crucial MX 500; no spinning drives at all

Boot drive: M.2 between 40 and 80 dollars; 250 gb or 500 gb; which is not highly critical if from Samsung or WD or Crucial.

Motherboard: your choice; 250 dollars or less; MSI or Gigabyte; with 2, possibly 3 M.2 ports; maybe B760 or B760M. Not sure why you've chosen Z motherboard.

What does all of that do to your budget?

What does that do to your storage ideas? Are you OK with 4 TB not 8 TB?

Nothing overtly "wrong" with any of your choices, but I'm wondering about your thought process regarding the allocation of the 2500 to each component in the PC?

  1. With a budget that big you should be able to allocate enough for at least a 1TB SSD. (personally I would get 2 SSD's, a 500GB for Windows, and 1TB for Apps and Games).
  2. Intel CPUs all have Graphics EXCEPT those with an F (So both F and KF don't but K and nothing (i.e 13600) do)
  3. Two M.2 ports should be fine, if you really need more storage it is likely to be bulk which you can put on SATA as it won't need to be superfast.
  4. Personally all the 40 series cards are very bad value. But if you must the 4070ti is probably the least worst option. Personally I would see if you can get a 6800XT at a decent price could be a lot better value.

Again thank you for the help.

To clarify, I am thinking 500 mb would be plenty for OS primary drive.
2-4 TB would be plenty for second data drive

Currently, my old rig has 250 mb SSD for OS and 1 TB spinner for data (only used at this point 1/3 of the 1 tb)

So a recommendation for the 500 mb and a 2 maybe 4 tb second drive would be awesome
second drive, I am fine with SSD or spinner

Would like to order things tonight.....feeling that I am overthinking the upgrade too much at this point 🙁

Also, if I went 4070ti to 6800 XT, I would need to change my MOBO chipset choice to ?

Any ATX board will work with either of those gpu's.

Well,

Hopefully, I did not screw the pooch, and order something wrong

I did read and research all the good advice given on this thread.

I also did a PCPartPicker check off all the parts to check compatibility. I even checked the MOBO's qualified list of memory and picked one from the list.

Much thanks to Why-Me, Lafong, Ar558 for your advice and help. Wishes for you all to have a great 2023!

1. Added suggested SSD x 2 and no spinner HD.

2. Went with a Z790 board, I know with the Z790 I probably not going to use full potential, but I think that on this build going to try a bit OC to expand my PC building skills . Additionally, this MOBO was $ on par with alot of the B770 and H770 Mobo's.

3. Intel Core i9-12900K is overkill and hot, but Friday sale at Newegg for $220 off, so what the heck. I was getting liquid cooling anyway.

4. 4070Ti GPU.

Not only is the 12900K geared for multi threaded applications, it gets beat like a rented mule by the cheaper 13 gen i5, lest we forget that 12 gen cpu's natively supports DDR5 4800mhz RAM while the 13 gen natively supports DDR5 5600mhz RAM.

Okay, I was to able to cancel the bulk of the order before being shipped.

Would changing to the i7-13700K be a good move for around the same price?

This allows you to add a 2.5" SATA III SSD in the future if and when you need more storage. This build gives you a super fast rig without breaking the bank.

I'm going to show you why I don't recommend an unlocked 12 / 13 gen i7 / i9 cpu for a gaming build. These cpu's are pushed to the limit out of the box. Now facture in all the e-cores the i7 and especially the i9 has and they run hot. If someone was to overclock one of those cpu's they better count on having a $300+ board and a 420 AIO and even then the gains are minimal at best.

All modern CPU's aren't really worth overclocking in practical terms as you will never be able to overclock all cores to the inbuilt Boost frequency. You lose out in some scenario either way. Plus you need stupid cooling.

@Nytmare Apologies on the 12900K, the gap isn't as bad overall as Why_Me's 1080p graph but it does appear the 13700K is faster in every scenario and the discount isn't enough to make the price to performance worth it.
It depends on whether you are gaming only on whether you want a 13600K or 13700K. If you don't do much threaded workloads in Windows the 13600k is probably the best bet.

I would recommend not getting the F (13600KF or 13600F), for 2 reasons. Firstly it's great to have graphics built in for troubleshooting. This forum is filled with people with issues they can't solve with there GPU's so unless you have loads of spare GPU's
I would keep the capability, secondly if you do any video transcoding QuickSync is really good (which comes with the inbuilt Graphics) and speeds up transcoding massively.
