Hello all !

It time to upgrade my existing desktop. The prior build is about 6 years old and showing its age.
So here is what I picked out for the upgrade. The computer would be used for gaming and some work -_-
My gaming is mainly at 1080. I am not sure my Asus 34” curved monitor would support 4k.

Please look at the build and give me your suggestions. Thank you in advance.

-Not sure if the Corsair H100i V2 CPU cooler can be used on the new build, so I did pick out a new cooler.
-I have had good luck with Asus, Corsair, Gskill, but open to your input.

My budget is around $2500 USA.

Your monitor is the resolution, you can’t display any more than the monitor is capable of? It’s a 1440p UW monitor it can do 1440p UW.
You have a CPU cooler listed on the build and a different one you say you intend to keep and reuse in the build.

You could probably go AMD for the CPU with a 7700X and get a 3080Ti or a 7900XTX/4080 in there too for under 2500.

Also with DDR5 make sure the meteors you buy is listed as compatible with the motherboard QVL list otherwise there’s a decent change it won’t work

1. I do have a CPU cooler on my old build.
Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 Extreme Performance Water / Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm (CW-9060025-WW)
-Can I use it on a new build, or is it too old and will not work?

2. I have a pretty good PSU on the old build.
Corsair HX Series, HX1000, 1000 Watt, Fully Modular Power Supply, 80+ Platinum Certified,
-Where would you put the saved $ on another area of the build?

3. I have had good luck with Asus MOBO's. Thoughts on the MSI MOBO vs my ASUS choice ?

4. Storage: Is it preferable to go SSD on both the boot drive and the secondary drive? I was thinking SSD for boot drive and then standard HD for secondary data HD ?

5. I would prefer to stick to NewEgg and Amazon.

Asus seems to be fading in popularity on this site. Not sure how valid that is.

I'd certainly try to avoid spinning hard drives entirely if possible.

Maybe a smallish SSD (probably NVMe; maybe 500 GB) for the boot drive and applications and a big one (2 or 4 TB) for all data....could be ordinary 2.5 inch SATA if budget requires that.

I think people are becoming jaded with the ROG tax, lack of certain features at lower prices, falling customer support confidence, and they do not seem to have the edge with stability and bugginess involving their software and BIOS for their products. I personally prefer ASUS products over MSI, but the latter makes good motherboards still, I just try and avoid their lower end graphics cards.

A 3080 is overkill for 1080p gaming in almost all cases. Unless you're one of those "competitive" gamers who claims they can tell the difference between 144hz and higher (Which is scientifically impossible but I wont go into that). Is your 34" Monitor native 1080p as that seems low? If you are considering gaming at 1440p the 3080 makes more sense, other wise a 3070/6750XT would be more sensible.

Every single test I have seen using normal people in blind testing, shows no statistical ability to show a difference. It's irresponsible to encourage people to spend money on expensive equipment that will make little to no difference to their actual usage.

You mean, in your opinion, he will not benefit. Ascribing your opinion as fact is not responsible. Give your opinion and any support you deem necessary to let the OP decide. Like I said he already has a top of the line UW 1440p monitor, he can choose any resolution he deems is necessary, and if he ever want to take advantage of the monitors native resolution is some demanding games he will need the graphics horsepower.

Please, would you kindly, post a link to one or more of these tests you are referencing. Personally I can tell the difference between 120 /144/ 165 fairly easily. I can see that anything beyond 165hz as being smoother than 165 and below, but cannot tell you if its 240hz or 1000hz. The actualized benefit of those extra frames in a game is subjectively beneficial or neutral. Just because some, or potentially most, people cannot perceive or gain a benefit from those extra frames, that does not mean the OP will not. He already has the monitor to support whatever he pleases and is asking for a graphics card recommendation, and for his monitor it would be nothing less than a 3080. There are games a 3080 cannot get 60fps at 1080p with higher settings, let alone 3440x1440p.

You can save money by potentially reusing the AIO and the PSU, but a word of caution; PSUs ability to provide its advertised wattage lowers with age, and AIOs slowly lose their ability to work due to losing water through a process called permeation. Usually AIOs are good for up to 5-6 years. If yours is past that in age I would replace it. PSUs are usually good through the length of their warranty and I believe that one has a 10 year warranty. If its older than that I would consider replacing it.

After reading the above replies....

I should clarify the resolution comment. The above monitor (ASUS Republic of Gamers Swift PG348Q 34" 21:9 Curved Ultra-Wide G-Sync IPS Monitor ), I would like to keep for the time being. The maximal resolution of the monitor is 3440 x 1440. Thus, if I have the ability on the computer to go higher than 1080 for gaming I will use the available power.

Playing around with things and putting more $$$ in the upgrade....

Prefer Newegg, but using Amazon is fine also.

Good question -_-

The I9-12900K was listed on some suggested "higher" end builds, so I was trying to put more future proof in the build going to it and bumping up the 3080 to the 4080.
The reality is that the CPU you pick beyond a 12700k or a 13600k will be mostly useless because all you are getting for 100s more is 1-5% fps and more cores, which will be useless for most game in the foreseeable future. The 13000 series intel CPUs will pretty much all get you more fps stock than a 12900k because the single threaded improvement makes up for a lot with the increased clock rates of the older higher end CPUs. Personally I would get a 13600k or a 13700k for a build right now but leaning towards the 13600k for people that don't intend to do any productivity tasks.

I'm more inclined towards AMD, but 13600K is a great CPU - better than AMD's similarly priced offerings if you also use your PC for multithreaded work i.e. productivity/professional. For your SSD I'd say a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro is the sweet spot. You already have a great PSU IMO so keep that. RAM go ahead with the Corsair Vengeance, don't pay the ASUS premium and consider staying away from the vanilla 3080; either go with 7900XTX if you can find a partner model at MSRP or 6950XT.

EDIT: Before I forget, if this is your cooler it apparently is not compatible with LGA1700, my rec is any of the Arctic LF II variants.

That motherboard is back ordered at New Egg. And it is 420 dollars. Could be an excellent product, but I'm wondering if you have seen any reviews? Do you need all of those features...PCIe 5.0; four M.2 ports, etc? Your chosen M.2 drive is not PCIe 5.0. Just wondering if you could step down a bit on the motherboard and spend the saved money elsewhere?

I'd be sure to drill down on that liquid cooler for reviews and others' experience.

The case is somewhat getting old, but build quality is quite nice and very roomy for all the parts.
The case is legacy and is not being built anymore.

That's a solid case for sure ^^ but like most of the older Lian Li's it doesn't have good airflow. One last question ... do you prefer RGB or no RGB?

2. What is the advantage of the B760 chipset over the Z790?

3. On the existing Lian Li case I have, I did add some extra internal fans along the with new side panel with a 250 mm fan. So the airflow is better than what was present in the stock set up.

RGB is the coloured lights that appeal to the young people

The B760 is a lower tier so it's slightly less capable but should be at least £/$50 cheaper.

I think it stand for red, green, blue? Flashing lights if you like that.

B760 would lack SOME features not found on Z790. It's up to you to decide if the features it lacks are important for your specific purposes. Most people wouldn't need those extra features. Look at the specification sheet for any motherboard you are considering to examine the features.

It's no accident it isn't Z760 and B790. Some people figure 790 of anything must be better than 760. The marketing department knows that and names the chipsets accordingly to maximize revenue.
