Hi, thank you checking this thread out - hope you can help me out!

About 8 years ago this forum helped me (different user, back then) build my current primary workhorse and, hundreds of projects later, i think it's time to retire this beautiful but tired machine and replace it with some new hardware.

USES: Video Editing, Animation, 3d, Photo Editing, Sound Design.
SOFTWARE: Adobe Suite (Pr, Ae, Lr, Ps, Au, Me), DaVinci Resolve, Cinema 4d, Blender.
CURRENT WS: i7-4790 + Asus z97 Pro + 32Gb DDR3 + CM 212 + CM 750W + GTX970 + CM Silencio 550 + Lots of Drives - SSDs, HDDs, M.2s
BUDGET: As little as possible! Every 50 bucks i can save help me on buying other stuff i need! Like storage and memory cards!!!
REGARDING LOOKS: Minimal footprint possible - ATX size with as little light and noise as possible!

PARTS I'M CONSIDERING:
  • Intel Core i7-12700;
  • Asus TUF Gaming H670-Pro WiFi D4;
  • 64 GB DDR4 (2*Kingston Fury Beast 32GB DDR4-3200MHz 2R CL16);
  • MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12G OC;
  • 2* M.2 2280 Western Digital Blue SN570 1TB TLC NVMe;

I always setup my drives like this:
  • 1x M.2 for System and Programs;
  • 1x SATA SSD for User Files and Resources (Stock footage, music, templates and plugins);
  • 1x SATA SSD for Proxies;
  • 1x SATA SSD for Project Files and Cache;
  • 1x SATA HDD for Outputs and Final Exports;
  • 2x SATA HDD for Masters;
  • Backup SATA HDDs as needed.

So i need the Chipset (and Mobo) to give me plenty of i/os and possible future expansion, if needed, without compromising any performance!

My questions:

1 - I'm having a hard time settling for the CPU - I never used 12th Gen and wasn't able to decide what would be the best option: 12700 or 12700K (I don't plan to overclock - i favour stock performance and stability; but are they really the same processor?), 12700 vs 12900 or even a 12600K! What would you say would be a good investment?

2 - Going with non-K versions - would i be fine with the stock Intel Cooler? By saving in a Cooler i could buy more storage!

3 - Love my simple CM Silencio 550 case, but it is an oven! Would it be a problem considering this new processors (CPU and GPU)? Are they really that much hotter than previous Gens?

4 - Regarding the Graphics Card, i'm favouring 12Gb against similar priced cards with 8Gb but more CUDA cores and higher frequencies - Am i being dumb?

Thank you for reading thus far,
I'm looking forward to read what your suggestions!

Disk....you might want to review your config.
I see 5 sata connections.
You show 6 sata disk.

Hi Bob.B, thanks for your reply!

On my current Mobo i'm using a PciEx to add 2 more SATA ports. (The board has 6 SATA connectors but 2 of them are useless when you use the M.2 connector! to which i didn't pay attention when buying, back then!)

On this new build i'm planning to use all M.2 available and the remining SATA connectors!

My comment on the Drives configuration was to provide some more info on what i'm trying to maintain/achieve on this build! The board I'm considering has 4 M.2 Slots and 4 SATA Connections, so in this new config i'll replace some SSDs for M.2s!

1&2 the 12700 is a good choice but you still need a decent cooler not the stock one or a hyper 212 (better)

3. More watts = more heat.

4. 12gb could be useful if your using GPU acceleration with the programs.

5. That was not asked. If that power supply is as old as your old PC replace it with something of good quality CM 750w is not much information.
