ok download this

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Post the make and model of your motherboard. though as the pins dont match we can pretty much assume yes it wont work.

do graphic cards have motherboard requirements? because the only old thing in my computer is the mobo if all this goes wrong im buying a new mobo

I thought it was a new CPU and old motherboard so the PSU and GPU should be the same?

Anyway download CPUz post your mobo make and model that way we can see what it supports

this is what it says for model Acer Rs740d0dvf ?

I cant find anything refering to that online

On the 1st screen of CPUz there is a bit says "Package: Socket AM3 (938)" yours will say something different can you say waht socket it says?

I'm not even sure I understand this question.

You say "Athlon 1 core". Does that mean it a single core AM2 Athlon 64?

In any case, the only thing that makes any sense is that the old CPU was AM2 Athlon 64 and that the new Phenom II is AM3 (940 pins for AM2 vs. 941 for AM3). That's STILL not two less though, just one more.

Otherwise, it have to be Socket 939 or older which wouldn't even come close to being two pins less.

Regardless of all of that, the 965 almost definitely won't be compatible with your motherboard if it's an AM2 board.

Edit: I see that you say it's an AM2 board. Yeah, it's almost definite that the 965 ISN'T compatible.

In theory its socket compatible if your board supports AM2+ however I would venture to say as it doesnt work your board either doesnt support AM2+ or as its an OEM board its just been locked down to hell and back

*Edit* means new AM3+ board and new DDR3 RAM

Yeah, I see that now. I edited my post above to say that.

Anyway, the 965 almost definitely isn't compatible.

It will just not boot and I will have to post another facepalm from my collection :)

You have clearly lasted the old PC a while so think of it as a long term investment on this stuff you should get a decent lifespan from the 965BE
