New Graphics card for Gateway FX6840 series

My main concern before buying, is to make sure I know what caused my previous one to be so hot all the time (which is what I believe caused my problems with it.) I have very limited knowledge of hardware, but I suspect the previous graphics card issues to be caused by me leaving the computer on 24/7 for 3 years. If not that, maybe something with the power supply or my monitors. My monitors are two different resolutions (two different brands) and they often flash weird glitchy looking images. They also have some sort of partial image stained on them which can't be captured by the print screen function. More info in additional comments.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: This week
BUDGET RANGE: $150-250 after rebates
USAGE: Gaming and game development.
CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: ATI Radeon HD 5700 and Gateway FSP450-60EP (?)

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Gateway, FX6840. 8 Gigs of memory.
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: No preference
PARTS PREFERENCES: No Preference
OVERCLOCKING: No
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: I honestly dont know what this is
MONITOR RESOLUTION: I have two monitors. I can post the resolutions later once I get my computer running again, I dont know at the moment.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I bought this computer three years ago and it has been running all the default parts of a Gateway FX6840 series. Recently I noticed that in games and youtube videos, the top half of the screen was rendering before the bottom, causing the screen to look like it split at various heights. I have assumed this is a graphics card problem, so I got some software that monitors the graphics card and I noticed it typically runs at 100 C. I'm worried that if I get the same card, it will just burn out like this one did. Thanks in advance for your help

Hey thanks for the suggestion. I think I have a problem though. I was previously convinced that my graphics card was the source of my issues, but I'm not sure now. I cleaned the dust from the heatsink (I didn't know how until now) and the card no longer hits 100 C (which is what I thought the problem was)

I'm not sure if this is the proper part of the forum to ask this question, but my purchase depends on the answer:

Note that the top half seems to render before the bottom half. For some reason I thought that I wouldn't be able to take a screenshot of it, but yet here it is. This happens to everything from games to youtube videos to dvds.

OHH, yeah, that is called screen tearing, to give you an example of what it is: i just got a gtx 670 and when gaming sometimes it performs over 60 frames per second, sometimes even hitting over 100, when that happends, since my monitor has only 60hz of refresh rate then that happends screen tearing, here is a link with a full explanation about that on wikipedia:

I turned on triple buffering and set vsync to be always on. I still see screen tearing. So does this mean I do or do not need a new graphics card? Should I make a different thread in the proper subforum about this?

well why dont you try out another monitor before anything else? maybe its your monitor the one that its failing. some days ago i had these weird waves moving on my screen they were annoying, i tho it was my monitor or vieo card, it turned out to be the vga cable i was using with an adaptor to the dvi port on the card. so i just used another hdmi cable and it got fixed.

I use a dual monitor set up and both of them have screen tearing problems. they are both set to 60 hz refresh (the only option available for them.) If I had another monitor I would try it out.
I was so excited when I thought vsync and triple buffering would fix it 🙁

Does your mother board comes with integrated graphics, if so then try to use that port as your video source and see if screen tearing is still happening.

The computer does come with onboard graphics card but its not enabled, and if I remove my ATI graphics card then the computer refuses to boot, which I'm trying to solve by changing it in the BIOS (someone suggested this to me.)

This is embarrassing. I cant find out how to enter bios. I tried F1, F2, Delete, and F12 (which all brought me to screens that I don't think were BIOS. I tried googling for an answer.

Delete button enters CMOS, which I dont know whether or not its related. There isnt anything about video stuff I can find. By process of elimination I have gone through every option of the cmos setup utility, finding nothing of use for switching to onboard video card.

What am I doing wrong?

thats where I was 10 minutes ago, its complete bs. F1 and F2 just take me to a screen that says "Boot with windows 7" and there is no other option to select.

When I removed my graphics card the computer repeatedly beeps one long beep and 2 short beeps, and refuses to start

Ok i found the manual of your pc, and according to it, you have to press the "Del" key to acces to the bios when the computer is starting, here is the link to the manual:

its commonly under integrated peripherals, but i dont see it on the options you gave me, can you find out what integted chip does your system has? maybe you need to install the drivers for it.

do this, install a program called pc wizard 2012, it gives you all the information of your system to the minimum detail, once you do it, check your motherboard specifications.

I gave you the entire bios word for word. I don't know what else to tell you. I'm looking at it again, and I don't see anything close to "primary video adapter" and I dont see anything set to "integrated" or "onboard" (aside from the audio drivers being set to onboard.)

I have noticed something that might be important to note. Before I enabled vsync, I could take screenshots of the tearing. Now, I haven't been able to take any screenshots even though the tearing is pretty constant during an active youtube video. Is this significant or relevant to finding whats causing the tearing?
