Forgot an important one.

Upgrading a Mac is a no brainer, in the new ones is even easier. The parts are completely compatible, and the specialized stores that guarantee that the parts are compatible sell them at pretty much the same price a normal store does.

I just replaced my hard drive for a 500GB @ 7200 RPMs it was a breeze.

Aesthetics shouldn't be something to discuss, those are completely subjective, to me my mbp is as sexy as a piece of equipment can be (I am an engineer, equipment can be very very sexy, but this is not the issue).

People also pay for the service they get from Apple. To me, it has been very good, just as good as dell's (apple care vs complete care).

This latest round of apple adds just strike me as desperation on their part. With the credit crunch, buyers are going to be much more wary about pricing and the apple tax becomes much harder to swallow.

Remember that Apple isnt targetting these ads at people who know anything about computers. Its easy for computer enthusiasts to see through the total bs marketing spin in these ads. The target market for these adverts are computer novices, or casual computer users. For these kind of buyers, price is a big factor in a computer purchase, and Microsofts' adverts were very smart hitting Apple where it is most vulnerable.

The fast turnaround on this latest round of Apple ads in response to the Microsoft marketing campaign, makes it obvious they are very worried.

Oh come on people - these are ads. They're supposed to be sarcastic, provocative and funny. Stop being so up tight about it! Who cares what Apple/MS do? The ads work, or they'd stop doing them. People like us, in forums like these, are not the target audience so of course we'll hate them.

For the record, I run a mixed shop of more than 200 Mac Pros and high-end Dell PCs w/XP. Support time on the Macs per user is less than 5% of that required for the Dells. 1 hardware failure in 3 years on the Mac Pros (a fan) versus 12 full returns on the Dells and about 50+ engineer calls to replace parts. We progressively, unsurprisingly, are buying more Mac Pros to replace the Dell boxes. Personally, I'm completely agnostic (PC in the office, Mac at home, Linux server at home), but on the real-world evidence of our site, there is a very wide gap between - at the very least - Apple and Dell/Windows in terms of real-world quality and usability of the systems they provide.

I guess, if I was Apple, and I wanted to sell more Macs, I'd do just exactly what they're doing with these ads.

[citation][nom]spanky deluxe[/nom]Am I the only one that has noticed Tom's Hardware's recent change in tune in regards to Macs? Up until a few weeks ago they couldn't stop talking about them and how great they were and now recently they've been mostly saying bad things. Makes sense for them sense since they've probably realised they were barking up the wrong demographic tree and realised this after looking at the comments from most of the commenters on here.Personally, I'd rather news such as this be reported as news rather than a view on the matter and that if writer's at Tom's do want to add a "I don't know about you" comment then they should either do so in a comment to the new article themselves or by putting it in an "Opinion:" article instead.[/citation]

[citation][nom]Landru[/nom]Oh come on "Tom". Your anti-Apple bias is showing (again). The Mac commercials have it all over the Microsoft ones, mainly because they are funny, and have a basis in truth.[/citation]

It depends on who writes the article. In this instance? I have two Macs and a PC. That said, just because I have products from one or both, that doesn't mean I have to like the companies. Like I said in the article, I think they're both being silly.

I didn't see the ad your referring to but the one I seen did put Microsoft down. It started out with PC going though pictures one at a time. The mac asks him what he is doing. PC explains I have to go though all these pictures to find the correct one. Mac more or less says with my free face recognition software you only need to find one picture of the person. PC then hands the his stack of pics to mac.

Mac is making a good point that their OS is much better than any home version many have been comparing a mac to pc build against.

@mitch074
I replaced the drive myself I don't know how could I have paid the apple tax. And a 500GB @ 7200 2.5" sata drive is well above 100 bucks, it is a newly launched drive. so please get your facts straight.

[citation][nom]dingumf[/nom]Basically put, Apple and all its products are for retards looking for the more simplistic, expensive products.[/citation]

And that's why every phone manufacturer is copying the iphone design...

There's just so much wrong with your statement, it's not even worth my time to tear it apart.

But it's all true and it's exactly the reason why PC's are such a pain in the butt to use... What's childish about pointing that out?

[citation][nom]ryaninomaha[/nom]Since most Apple users have basically no clue how a computer works they will have to ask us PC guys to fix them up. We shall calmly respond with our middle finger. F*** you Apple.[/citation]

Of course. Apple users have no clue how computers work. I guess most university lecturers in the sciences and university researchers must all have no clue how computers work. The proportion of 'knowledgeable' mac users is at least equal to the proportion of 'knowledgeable' windows users in relationship to total user base. The difference is, for those that don't have a clue how computers work, macs are generally easier to use and if people ever get stuck they can get free support from a Genius bar.

As far as people saying macs are 'far less compatible', that's just not true. The only thing I couldn't get working with any of my macs over the years was a cheapo usb webcam from eBay.

tequilaguru, your points are all valid. You actually have a use for the things that Macs offer. The other 90% of people I know who buy Macs wouldn't even know what you're talking about, they spend the extra thousand bucks cause they're pretty (and then of course come to me asking for help for whatever reason their "PC" isn't working properly).

I fix everyone's computers in my dorm at university. About 2/3 of the people have PC's and the rest have Macs (two people have Linux). I spend most of my time fixing PC's, but it's almost always a printer driver, or something like that. The people with Mac's rarely need help.

I hate Mac's with a firey passion, I've always only used Windows, and never had a problem. But for the common arts student out there... it always seems Mac is the better choice. It all comes down to personal opinions.

Speaking of Microsoft commercials though, I love the one where the 8 year old kid makes a movie about 'mr teeth'.

[citation][nom]Kami3k[/nom]I think Microsoft should just make a ad of bill gates laughing at apple at this rate.[/citation]
A laugh off contest (no idea how that would work 😛 ) between Bill and Jobs? Now THAT would be funny!

[citation][nom]Landru[/nom]Oh come on "Tom". Your anti-Apple bias is showing (again). The Mac commercials have it all over the Microsoft ones, mainly because they are funny, and have a basis in truth.[/citation]

It's funny that some people thinks that Tom is pro-Apple because editors write articles about Macs and others think they are anti-Apple because they suggest that maybe Apple is a not-so-great company. Then you go on to say Tom can't be objective. Go figure.

Sounds like the macheads are guilty of their own accusations. sounds to me that these fanboyeeeees have been using mac too long that they have no idea how windows works, but they just have to bust out a commercial to make those college kids proud of walking around with their super cool laptops. Whats worse? Buying a new peripheral and sometimes having to install a driver or buying a new peripheral only to find out that you absolutely cant even use it because no such driver even exists? Once again, a really weak point by mac.

It's not nearly as childish as the "pep rally commercial." where cheerleaders chant "Pc's number 2"; effectively calling it poo in the most juvenile of ways.

What's funny is that in the "legalese" ad, you don't see Mac opening his mouth to say anything that PC said, because the "legal copy" would have been just as big. Hypocrites.

Here's a questionnaire to help you determine if a MAC is right for you:

Do you want to use FinalCut Pro?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, a MAC is the machine for you.

As for the ad, I love seeing Apple being Apple, it's kept them on the bottom for years.

Apple started it and now they complain when they get beat at their own PR campaign game. I think the using of "actual/real" (quotes cuz they are probably getting paid)people as opposed to scripted achitypes is really compelling to the average consumer. They realize they can relate to those people more and so will tend to side with the side of the argument they are presenting. If apple had done so first, their ad campaign wouldn't be looking "second best" now.

It does what it's designed to do ... get people to talk about it. ... just like these little snippets of policing Apple's claims seem to get a lot of traffic (and do their job as well).

So can anyone really say that when you buy a PC from the store say an HP... You don't need to uninstall about 70% of the programs? I've done this for family many many times to help speed up their computer with 10 programs in the system tray that's fresh out of the box.

Yes i'm sure these are "actual/real" quotes... Bet when you watch infomercials and say to yourself "man these guys are so amazed by this product, i want one too now."
