Hey guys,

I am trying to see if there is a problem here. I am sorry if I was not clear. As a debugger, I need clear information to perform debugging. So when you look at orange/white status, please look at the 'last You last visited on....' which you can see at each 'section' (e.g. http://forumz.tomshardware.com/community). Anything past this time should be orange. So see if that time makes sense, i.e. it reflects the last time you were on the site.

For me, this time is still reflecting last night, so everything past last night is orange for me.

This will <i>really</i> help me diagnose the problem. Right now everything is working perfectly here, so I have to rely on more information from you to diagnose the problem you are seeing.

Let's pull together and put this bug to bed.

For me, this time is still reflecting last night, so everything past last night is orange for me.

Perhaps that's part of the problem. I log-off and shut down at night ... so when I log in, the "last visit" time (as I recall, since I wasn't taking notes) reflected when I logged in this am - that part, I know with some certainty.

I will start logging log-in's and log-out's in addition to "the last visit" data.

I've been having trouble with the new posts all weekend.... I come in & see new posts, read them & make a few posts of my own.... Then when I reboot, I come back in & all the posts I read before are marked as unread again, including the posts I posted.... It happened several times this morning. I was coming on the forum, leaving, Installing an update for Zone Alarm when it happened once... It happened again after rebooting from installing a demo game... It just happened again after playing a game, quiting & coming onto the forum w/o rebooting.... This was going on yesterday as well.....

I also don't see any new posts at the community level, even though I've never clicked into those forums... [shrug]

Steve,

Russell & I did an experiment on the forum.... We were talking on Skype to see how the forum was working as we did things on each end. I came in the forum & my posts were checked as unread.... I went through all of them to mark them read again... BTW some of them were my very own posts that showed as unread from this morning!!!!!!

I told Russell to watch on the community level & I shut down. Russell verified that I was logged off. Then I started up my browser & Russell verified that I showed back up at the community level as logged back on... When he verified me as back on the forum, I went to the other & all the post I had just read, showed as unread again!!!!!

I found another little thing It says I last visited on Fri. Nov. 25 10.31 AM We just did this at a tad before 4 PM so it's taking me back to 10:31 AM instead of where I actually came in at just before 4 PM......

I opened my IE browser to the other section (when I clicked the link at the top of IE for Tom's, surprisingly I went straight to the "Other" section) This has never happened before as I copied the link from TG Forunz home page and not the "Other" section.

RC and I experimented about the read and un-read posts.
R C. asked me to go to the other section and read some of the posts.
Then I went to community to verify R C. was shown as on-line.
Then I returned to the other section and the posts that I read only moments before were showing as unread again.
Then I clicked "log out" at exactly 4:00 PM.
At 4:02 PM I logged back in and RC verified that I was on-line at the community level.
All posts were shown as read. Before logging out at 4:00 there were many posts/threads marked as unread. the time is currently 4:52 pm.
Last visited showed 4:00 pm (the time I logged out).

As I write this RC Says that I do not show as online, this has to be related to the problem. I certainly am online and logged in at Tom's since I am currently writing this post.

EDIT .... RC said that after I posted this I was shown as active/logged in!!!

The following is from a log I am now keeping (with notes):
1. Logged off at 3:35pm (I had logged in at 12:27pm - was reflected by:
You last visited on Fri Nov 25, 2005 12:27 pm - (log in)
Perenthese mine.
2.
You last visited on Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:07 pm - (Log-In)
(Parenthesis mine) I just logged in after being off-line for 1.5 hrs ...

all forum/thread status indicators were marked as read (no color at all)

Don't know what else to tell you. This is total in Hardware and Community.
Just solid white!

Edit: See these two test threads:

http://forumz.tomshardware.com/community/ing-ftopict14398.html

Hope this helps.

This will be my last post on this issue ... I logged out at:
You last visited on Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:07 pm - (Logging out @ 8:02pm)

I logged back in at:
You last visited on Fri Nov 25, 2005 9:04 pm - (Logged In @ 9:04pm)

Everything is uncolored (suggests I have read all) - but I left dozens of posts unread in Hardware Forums ...

I quit.

Look at my post (the one with the Atlanta falcons logo) notice the flag is yellow . This is my own post and the server / BB software says that I haven't read it and even the one below it by Jake indicates unread..

Steve I know this has to be a hair pulling aggravating situation but I cannot for the life of me connect any rhyme or reason to the actions of the bulletin board.

If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know. [/img]

You last visited on Sat Nov 26, 2005 12:20 pm

I see no orange - nothing ... anywhere - and this is my dummy acct

Edit: I had just logged in to make this post, maybe 2-3 minutes before the time stamp.

btw - the tags are out of order ... I have to manually enter them, so as not to get them reversed.

Steve,
This image shows the results of a search done from the community level by selecting "view posts since last visit".

Please note that there are no yellow flags even though I requested unread posts.

It seems to me that the search engine is not recognizing read vs. unread posts . Since the search produced only 4 results it had to have recognized that the other posts have been read. IMO this could only result due to a time restraint imposed on the search engine. ie. The Colored flags are turned off immediately when the posts in the thread are all read. However this information is not passed on to the search engine due to a specific time period not having been met.

Does this make sense to you? Perhaps I'm not being clear .
I will PM you with my contact information.

dh, last login relates to the last time you had a session. If you logout, then the session is gone. As an alternative, you can keep the session (which lasts an hour).. even if you go to another computer in the house, as long as it uses the same ip (as it should), your session would be there.

I'm keeping a log and notes as to what is screwed up about this current configuration. Seems to me, that after the forum "crashed" a couple of days ago, and cookies were reverted back to the default (local machine) - this problem started. Before the crash, things worked well for a time. I'm getting PM's and calls from people telling me how bad it is. I'll wait a bit before I re-enter this debate ... or confusion ... 🙁

Apparently steve_a doesn't want anything to do with it.... He hasn't posted or commented back to either Russell or I on what we found, but he's posted in other threads over the weekend..... We spent quite a bit of time trying to help figure out things.... I guess that it isn't appreciated....

I've had to read the same threads 3 times to shut off the unread marks this morning & I've only been on an hour... Also threads I've never even been on show as read....... You can't make rhyme nor reason to what this friggen forum is doing....

Is it possible that we can go back to what we had that actually worked????? It sure doesn't seem as though the guy running the show, has a clue as to how we had the forum, or use the forum to start with.......

Between my last post a 4:47 & this one, I've had everything show unread twice more, including my own posts, here & in the other.....

What am I doing???

1. I'm posting, then going to play a game with my browser shut down, playing a level or so, then shutting down the game, starting my browser & checking responses to my posts... All are marked unread again, including my own posts......

2. I post & then go & surf the web for awhile, come back into the forum again & all posts are marked unread again, including my own posts....

yeah its been four or five days since i logged in to check and when i did this morning all the threads were marked as read so i skimmed through the first few in each section and didnt really feel up to goin thru each one.

It looks like we are having way too many problems in this area. So I have decided to move to a fully server based model, as has been recommended here. Then we would not have any problems with logins/logouts, etc.

It will take me a day or two to make this work. So bear with me.

steve

Thanks Steve, this really is annoying.

Personally I wish that you would reconsider the one hour time constraint and do away with it while you're working on this already.
