Hey guys,

I relativly new to tom's hardware and thought I'd write here to see if you can help me with the trouble i'm having..

I just put 700$ worth of upgrades into my machine. the problem is that when i use the machine it tends to freeze for a couple seconds then return to normal and after a while it will do it again. At first i thought this was somehow related to a game I play as everytime i would load that game this would happen. However when I turned the machin on this morning it began doing it without anything running. It has been doing it off and on and I can't really identify whats causing it.. I've collected as much info as I can so here it is including the new parts.

A new case with an AMD approved 300 watt powersupply.
1.4 gig thunderbird
Asus A7M266/ bios version 1004a
4 in 1 driver ver 4.33
agp miniport driver 480

512 megs DDR ram
Visiontek Geforce 3/ Detonator drivers ver 21.81

Creative X-Gamer Live 5.1 / creative SB live series driver ver 4.12.01.0906

those are the new parts the old parts i transfer was

a dvd-rom
creative labs cd-rw
floppy drive
and a Deskstar 13.6 gig 7200 rpm hard drive.

I have asus probe and my temps are running around 46 with the case off and runs up to around 55. I had some trouble with the fans and will be picking up a couple more this afternoon so that i can run it with the case on.

I can't think of anything that would cause the 3 to 4 second lockups I thought it might be heat related but i don't think its running hot enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm pullin my hair out trying to figure this out.

thanks in advance

Is it on a networ? I had a similar problem because my lan cable had been damaged and it kept connecting/disconnecting every few seconds.

It is on a network. My ip is assigned through dhcp and we pay for the extra ip address. However the problem occured right after I started the computer this morning. And i don't have any internet apps open on startup.

I'll double check the cable just to be sure

Guys, could this be some sort of trouble between the via chipset and the x-gamer live 5.1?

I'll try and remove the sound card tonight and see how things work and report back.

If you are running Windows 9x/ME make sure your video card is not sharing an IRQ.

Check to see if your hard drive, DVD and CD-RW all have DMA enabled.

Try to put your hard drive on its own IDE channel.

Do you have a virus checker scanning in background mode?

These are about all the ideas that I have.

Would you like a Quarter Pounder?
No, thank you. Just give me the BIG heatsink. It's an Athlon.
