I lost my network connection. When I view the Network
Adapter in device manager says not installed correctly.
When update driver the wizard returns:

"There was a problem installing the hardware.

An error occured during the installation of the device.

The system cannot find the file specified."

I get the same error on two different NICs I have tried.

The drivers are in the system32/drivers folder.

HELP please.

Hi,

Boot in save mode and login as administrator, go to device manager and uninstall the NIC then reboot.
Windows should found new hardware and install the drivers.
If PnP not appeared, use the Add New Hradware wizard, let windows search it and install the drivers for you.

I'm having this exact same problem on a brand new Dell Dimension 2400.

PnP works fine. It sees that there is a USB network adapter being
plugged in. It even sees the software on the CD, and copies the driver
file (or so it appears). I get the Microsoft warning message about
potential problems (continue anyway), and after all that, it says there
is a problem installing the device, and that the specified file could
not be found.

Safe mode uninstallation did not work. Same problem next time the
hardware is found.

Help!

Install the drivers that came with the USB network adapter! Don't try to use
the Windows generic drivers.
